Gradation Question

Hi

I did a bit of film SLR photography back in the day and have now got myself a DSLR after years of using compacts.

I've purchased an Olympus E420 and am playing around with the various settings. Can anyone help me out with gradation? I see that setting this to "high key" or "low key" causes the camera to increase or decrease the exposure time. Is this all it does and if so how does it differ from exposure compensation?
Both of these can be adjusted when developing raw images with seemingly very similar results.

Welcome to TP Joe :)

I'm not familiar with Olympus, but are you talking about "art filters" or whatever they call them? All I know is that Olympus have some unique JPEG processing options, and this sounds like it might be one of them.

It could be just some kind of exposure compensation, but I suspect it's a bit more than that, albeit subtle. Either way, the Raw file should be left untouched if you don't like the end result, so you can still go back to the Raw and tweak that in post processing as much as you like.

I'm sure some Olympus owners will be along to advise you :)

Jo, I had an Oly 420, and to be honest I left it on manual or ap. priority. The program settings are pretty poor (IMHO) and like you say, exposure etc can be adjusted in the software anyway.
