Ok. I've not bought a graphics card for a while as my normal route involves whatever Apple have stuck in their top machine going into mine but I'm wanting to add a graphics card to a desktop computer to play Elite Dangerous.... I've not played games on a computer since the Elite was out last time :D Anyway the computer has a HD4000 and I have a 7970 or something like that in the workshop..... Where would a HD4000 fit into say Nvidia and AMD's range if it were one of theirs? The site suggests something along to lines of a GTX260 or 4870HD any suggestions of a decent performer? It MUST be quiet! (the rest of the spec is quad i7 @ 4GHz, 32Gb Ram, SSD). The Macbook Pro uses the same graphics with GT650M dedicated but the Mac version is due soon......

The Mac Pro has a 5750 which is reasonably powerful but that is talking about desktop video cards for desktop video rather than games. Games haven't been any sort of priority to me for 2 decades or more but the computer in question has a serious PSU as well as the serious motherboard, processor, ram and SSD. I might wait a couple of days for the box to arrive and see how it runs then take a look. I think one of the GTX760 or 280X cards is likely to be best from the graph and prices.....

At least it shows how the HD4000 graphics compare:

A comparison of the HD4000, the 5750 that I have in the Mac Pro and the GTX760 (the 280X is just a little better than the GTX760)

If you want quiet and your case has good airflow then Palit make passively cooled versions of the GTX 750 Ti and GTX 750 (and Scan sometimes have them in stock). I have one of the 750 Ti's in my main PC also with a passively cooled i7 3770. There are only three fans in the whole thing, including the PSU. I've also found the Gigabyte Windforce GTX 750 Ti to be very quiet.

I thought the Pros had 5770? Either way the 57xx are pretty ancient now by any standard. I had a 5770, then 2x crossfired 5770 and replaced them both for the 7850 i have now. better performance less power consumption and less noise.

I run a 650ti in my media PC which we also use for gaming.

It runs all the games fine at 1080p. I just looked and a 750ti is only about £100-£110 so that would be my choice for bang for buck.
