That is right Paul but I understood when you interrogate the adapter to list all modes it should show all regardless of the monitor connected. It could be that your existing monitor will only support up to 1600x1200.
Thanks Lawrence, I have just checked and the driver is dated 10/06/2009. There is a newer release from NVidia but the 7800 GT is not among the supported cards.correct and latest drivers ?
On the system it just say's a 'plug & play' monitor. I have had a look round for a driver for my Gateway VX700 and there does not seem to be one for XP - not sure where to go from here.is the monitor correctly identified (make sure model number not wrong) and driver correct?
is the montor refresh rate supported?

The Gateway VX700 is a CRT !!!!Find a monitor with the same spec such as a Dell 2407wfp and try those instead. I have had to do that in the past.

It is set on 60, I just tried changing to 70 and then selecting 1600 x 1200. After I apply the Change it asks if you want to keep the change - I click yes, the screen goes dark for a few sec and then comes back and auto reverts back to 1280 x 1024.http://support.gateway.com/s/monitor/z01017/Z01017nv.shtml claims that it should be covered by the built in XP plug & play driver
have a look on advanced > monitor and look at screen refreesh rate, if an alternative (probably lower) refresh rate is available, select it and try again. I dont think some CRT monitors support the higher resolutions at the higher refresh rates.
Thanks, I will give it a go.Yes but the resolution is the same. Just give it a try often so long as the res is right you can adjust the rest using Windows and the menu on the monitor.
In reality Windows does not really need separate drivers for each monitor.
