Graphics card advice please

I have just about decided on a 24" 1900 x 1200 monitor - my current card is a 5 year old Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT, is this card up to running the monitor? (PS and general web use only- no gaming).

Just another question on my Graphics card. When I go into display properties > Advance > Adapter and list all modes it shows a big list of valid modes, the highest res being 1600 x1200. The same thing when I go into the Nvidia control panel it only shows a max resolution of 1600 x 1200.
How come this does not show higher res as the GeForce 7800 GT is supposed to go up to 2560 x 1600 ?

It could be that your existing monitor will only support up to 1600x1200.

That is right Paul but I understood when you interrogate the adapter to list all modes it should show all regardless of the monitor connected.

The other strange thing is that I cannot set anything above 1280 x 1024 even though the monitor supports higher res (1600 x 1200) Every time I try to set a higher res, as soon as I hit APPLY it reverts back to 1280 x 1024. Any ideas ?

correct and latest drivers ?
Thanks Lawrence, I have just checked and the driver is dated 10/06/2009. There is a newer release from NVidia but the 7800 GT is not among the supported cards.

For a 5 year old card I would have thought that the 2009 driver should have picked up the available modes.

The other strange thing is my current CRT monitor is capable of 1600 x 1200 but whenever I change the res above 1280 x 1024 it asked if you want to apply the change which I do but it always just reverts back to 1280 x 1024 - any idea's.
Thanks in advance.

is the monitor correctly identified (make sure model number not wrong) and driver correct?
is the montor refresh rate supported?

On the system it just say's a 'plug & play' monitor. I have had a look round for a driver for my Gateway VX700 and there does not seem to be one for XP - not sure where to go from here.

Find a monitor with the same spec such as a Dell 2407wfp and try those instead. I have had to do that in the past.

The Gateway VX700 is a CRT !!!!

Yes but the resolution is the same. Just give it a try often so long as the res is right you can adjust the rest using Windows and the menu on the monitor.

In reality Windows does not really need separate drivers for each monitor.

http://support.gateway.com/s/monitor/z01017/Z01017nv.shtml claims that it should be covered by the built in XP plug & play driver

have a look on advanced > monitor and look at screen refreesh rate, if an alternative (probably lower) refresh rate is available, select it and try again. I dont think some CRT monitors support the higher resolutions at the higher refresh rates.

It is set on 60, I just tried changing to 70 and then selecting 1600 x 1200. After I apply the Change it asks if you want to keep the change - I click yes, the screen goes dark for a few sec and then comes back and auto reverts back to 1280 x 1024.

Thanks, I will give it a go.
