Graphics card can't handle my new monitor!

Okay, I bought a Dell 2209WA - great. Tried to set it up at 1680x1050 as requested only to find my graphics card can't cope (Radeon 9250). Should it? I thought I had the latest driver for it. :S
 
Have you tried updating for your graphic card's driver? Worth a try imo.
 
It should do that res.

You may have to set up a custom resolution though as its not a standard one really. I use Nvidia so not sure what menu it would be in ATI terms, but in your GFX cards management progeramm you should be able to set it. I had to do this with my monitior which is the same res.

The Radeon 9250 does support that resolution and higher. Maybe your setting the refresh rate too high or something like that? Also as suggested, make sure you've got the latest drivers.

What actually happens? Does the screen come on for a second then goes to standby mode? Make sure the input settings are correct on the monitor itself.
 
I think the 9250 is a fairly old card and driver support stopped at XP, so Windows Vista or 7 might have some problems.

Try the latest Catalyst drivers, if they don't work then it might be time for a new graphics card.
 
Okay, it's got the most up to date driver as it's an old card as Simon says above. Catalyst has the required res in the dropdown menu, but when I try and set it it's just going black for a while then reverting to 1280. refresh is 60hz.
 
It should support that resolution, so it may well be a W7/driver issue. I have run monitors with the same res off of crappy and old intel integrated graphics, so it definately has enough grunt!
 
Neil, I've put the disc in, but there is no indication of how to load the driver.

Edit: I've stopped being thick and installed the driver. No change.
 
Have you tried uninstalling the driver and running it on whatever W7 loads up automatically? It may be a lot more recent than the available ones from ATI.
 
It is wierd, isn't it? A friend who works in this field suggested trying to find an optimised driver and giving that a whirl, but I really don't know what I'm looking for.
 
Try Omega drivers.

From their website:
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Starting from Catalyst 6.6 and up, the following cards/chipsets (including Mobility) are no longer supported by the ATI or Omega Drivers:

Radeon 7k Series
Radeon 8k Series
Radeon 9k-9250 Series

For these cards please use the Omega Drivers v3.8.252 or older (available on the Archive section), thank you.

I done a quick google and seen that people have had sucess with these on the 9250 and a 1680x1050 resolution.
 
Ha ATI and there great driver support, I am actually an ATI user but there customer service and software support is so behind nVidia its unreal.

It does seem to be a driver issue and I hope you get it sorted, some googling shows that some people do get it sorted while others gave up and bought a new card. Just remmebr keep uninstalling old driver completely before trying new ones.
 
Thanks guys. I've tried the following: downloading the driver Craig linked to, uninstalled the Radeon driver and installed the Omega one. Mmm, problem was it told me my graphics card is now a 9200 rather that the 9250. could'nt get even 1280 res with it so uninstalled it and let windows find a driver, which it did, but still syas my card is 9200 and I'm back where I was before but with a sysyem that thinks I'm running a 9200! Help!:bang:
 
Does it matter what connection you are using? DV-I etc.
 
Tom, much as it pains me to say it, but you may just be a bit of a genius (jammy git). It works with VGA. Now why would this be, eh?

I've had an potential answer to the digital problem on a techy forum. Apparently I need to turn on/enable HDTV setting in ATI control. Problem with that is Catalyst CC doesn't play well with calibration software.
 
I had a nosey around too, if you set up your drivers with the vga first, then when your monitor is working, switch to the dvi and it may work.
 
Have you sorted this out yet? If so what did you do to fix it?
 
Nope. Doesn't wanna play with digital.
 
I'd say buy a new graphics card, look on ebuyer.com and a good one with lots of ram can be had for less than £40

i'm just going to buy a new pc. mine is too slow anyway. :)
