Grey Import - Warranty

Hi all,

Kind of a specific question but here goes:

I recently bought a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 from SimplyElectronics.net

Perhaps I didn't research thoroughly enough but rather than being a UK based company as they say, they are in fact based in Hong Kong.

(Just as an aside, all the bad things you may have heard about them are true. Might be a lot cheaper than elsewhere but 5 un-answered emails, hours on hold and a 6 week wait had me sweating).

Anyway, the question is: does anyone know if I can get any sort of warranty via Tamron with it being, I suppose, classed as a grey import? The lens didn't come with any paperwork to that effect, just a serial number.

Would Tamron UK touch it with a bargepole if the worst happened?

Cheers for any input.

Danny.

Tamron service in the UK is handled by Intro2020 - www.intro2020.co.uk - look them up and give them a call/email. They serviced my 28-75mm for a very reasonable price and very quickly even though I didn't have any documentation for it.

Hope that helps :)

That's fantastic news. I'll fire off an email from work tomorrow. Not that anything has gone wrong yet but I need that peace of mind :)

Next time I'll do my research!!

Thanks!

that really asks the question if it is worth buying cheaper 3rd party lenses than say Nikkor or Canon lenses and paying a it more...

Well to be honest it's not a case of 'a bit more' - To get the equivalent Nikkor or Canon lens we're talking several hundred pounds more.

The Tamron lens is widely acknowledged as being the best value for money lens in its class....ie you get the most bang for your buck.

So I honestly think that the issue lies more with my lack of planning and research re the seller/warranty etc than it being a 3rd party lens.

I had an issue a couple of years ago with a canon lens from Simply Electronics.
I just used their returns service - you log it as a return on their website and they give you a uk address to send it to. They then ship it for repair at their Hong Kong workshop and return it to you. Mine took around 10 days for the whole turnaround. Hope this helps:thumbs:
