Grey import.

I recently bought a new lens from Amazon and susequently sold my D50 and bought a D90 off ebay.
Yesterday I decided to register the lens and the camera with Nikon.
The lens was no trouble and registered okay, however I could not register the D90 as I was told "it was a grey import" and could not be registered nor would Nikon ever repair it should it go wrong even if payment was offered.

I have made contact with the ebay seller and he told me that his wife bought the camera as a present for him also off of ebay. He also said that as these cameras are built like tanks they never go wrong, however should the unlikly happen do not send to Nikon as they charge the earth but take it to an approved repairer.

Any ideas as to how I now stand with this camera.

Is the warranty even transferable with Nikon cameras?

No idea but I doubt it would be. As for not repairing if it were to go wrong I'm sure there are others that can do it.

The warranty isn't transferable whether it's a grey market body or not. Also registering the warranty doesn't achieve anything except Nikon having your details....You need proof of purchase from a known retailer in your name.

I'm a little surprised (and concerned) that Nikon wouldn't repair even with payment offered.

I've never had to deal with Nikon regarding repairs, however I do presently have a slight issue with an old nikon lens which I may need nikon to look at.....I am quite confident that they will not turn down the repair work if I offer payment..or will they??

That's different to Canon then. I've had a warranty repair done when I have clearly bought second hand (original receipt included and it clearly wasn't in my name or anywhere near me - about 300 miles away to be precise).

I think all they were worried about is that it is less than a year old and bought from a reputable retailer in the UK.

And when was the last time you filled out a warranty card? In fact, when was the last time you saw a warranty card filled out by the shop????

Every guarantee has wiggle room, but try phoning them and see what the actual policy is...

Just quoting what they say on the web site ... don't shoot the messenger.

If they let it through all well and good but as it's an Ebay purchase I doubt very much the original invoice was included. If it was then it's always worth a punt.

Anyway if the purchaser didn't ask if any warranty was included and the seller didn't say there was on the listing then I fail to see the problem tbh.

Hopefully it won't go wrong so there will be no need to test Nikons return policy.

I've bought grey imports off ebay and from a retailer and have registered all of my bodies and lenses (including 2 second hand) with Canon and even registered with CPS and had no problems. I haven't had to get a repair done on any of them and my 550D is out of warranty now anyway so I can't tell you what would happen if the worst happened.
