I think the grip uses one battery until it's flat and then changes to the other automatically, which is why your yours has gone from flashing low to full. When this next one goes flat, then both will be dead and you need to charge both.

The Canon Grip on the 5D2 drains both batteries at the same time. The display only ever registers fully charged reducing to flat, once per pair of batteries.
I have never used Nikon but I remember reading somewhere that Nikon grips or at least some of them, are designed to drain one battery then switch across to the other but definitely not the sase on the 5DII grip.

What other features does a grip have over having a few spare batteries?
Sorry if this is a noddy question but its always something I've been confused over
Better handling, faster FPS on some cameras, portrait orientation controls to name a few.
