Or should have bought the same Canon grip I had on my last Canon, the 30D variant which I know did work on the 40D too. That didn't have any missing buttons and I can't believe Canon took any off of the newer version.
I do suppose though whether you want a grip or not depends on what sorta photography you do. I guess I always assume that its the same way I go about it which is that 99% of the time I pick up my camera and go out the door its the only purpose I am heading out. So thats with a bag full of big heavy kit and a very clear purpose.
If you are more a casual photographer of stuff that you come across when you are doing other things, maybe you don't want all that junk weighing you down...
