Grip VS Spare Batteries

Or should have bought the same Canon grip I had on my last Canon, the 30D variant which I know did work on the 40D too. That didn't have any missing buttons and I can't believe Canon took any off of the newer version.

I do suppose though whether you want a grip or not depends on what sorta photography you do. I guess I always assume that its the same way I go about it which is that 99% of the time I pick up my camera and go out the door its the only purpose I am heading out. So thats with a bag full of big heavy kit and a very clear purpose.

If you are more a casual photographer of stuff that you come across when you are doing other things, maybe you don't want all that junk weighing you down...
 
Bought an after market grip for my 350d several years ago, used it once and it now lives in the cupboard. Never bothered gripping the 40d.

Used the spare batteries that came with te grip a lot.

That is not quite right. BG-E2 and BG-E2N are identical apart from weathersealing. I had 30D myself, and the AF was initiated via * button. 40D has received a dedicated AF-ON button, so that * is used for AE lock. Unfortunately either grip doesn't have both * and AF-ON.
 
I use a 450D and leave the grip on permanently, despite only having a single battery in it at present. I wouldn't have it any other way - it's just so much more comfortable to use with a grip on, and much better for portraits with the extra controls. Even with a 50mm f1.8 on, I still use the grip purely for the ergonomics :)

Ahhhh got you, never had the 40D. Surely you can still program the camera to start AF with the * button, otherwise the grip would have little purpose?

Or are you saying you need AE lock and AF buttons?
