Yes
Had the D300 on a tripod outside earlier this week....managed to knock the damn thing over and guess what??.....Lens and body knackered! Lens was the 18-70, fortunately not the Tokina 11-16 I just bought, and is almost in two pieces. But worse is the camera....mirror has come loose inside and obviously wont meter/AF. Upset is an understatement!:'(
Have put a claim in for accidental damage with ins.co. who deal with Jessops....
guessing it might not be worth repairing the body reading through other threads on here......sad day.....

Really surprised the camera broke as they are built like tanks. Sorry to hear of your loss buddy! Hope the insurance claim works out.

From the outside the camera looks fine....the lens took most of the impact.....just inside that something has gone badly wrong.....I can see a small hinged mirror on the back of the main mirror and it's this that has come detached....

Had the same problem with an Nikon F5 body looks fine on the outside, but as i droped it in a bag,the lens complete right of,but the damage to the camera was to the mirror box, need a complete replacment :(

Bad luck! It's not the hardest thing to do, knock over a tripod. But the camera sounds fixable.

[edit] maybe not ^

Well, there is a happy ending to this.....just got off the phone with Jessops who are the nominated supplier for my insurance company and I will be receiving vouchers to the value of a D300S and a Nikon 16-85VR as replacement for my dead D300 and 18-75!
Very happy with the outcome....now all I need to decide is whether to sell the 16-85 and get a used 17-55 f/2.8 instead???!!!

I would, cracking lens that worked brilliantly with my D300s before I went mad and sold it.

You'll probably have made a profit too at a ridiculous Jessops price! Unless you bought it from them of course :P

That is a remarkably quick settlement.

The insurance company in question is morethan. The D300 was covered under my household contents accidental damage policy with new for old replacement and upgrade if the insured items are no longer in production. I must say they have been brilliant.....one call to the insurance company to report the damage, then a call from the repair agents to arrange collection. That was just over a week ago.....was told normally two weeks but gave the repair company a call today just to check on progress and was told neither lens or camera is economically viable to be repaired. Given a direct number to Jessops insurance office where I had a very helpful lady tell me to expect vouchers in the post. Initially they wanted to give me a 18-105 VR as the lens replacement but said I wasn't happy with that...... No problem she said....I'll put the 16-85 instead! ( it is the direct replacement for the 18-70). Brilliant so far.....will let you know how the rest goes.
First time I've claimed anything on contents insurance. Happy lad!

All good that, I keep my gear on a separate specialist policy as I don't want the household insurance to go up if I claim.

unlucky buddy sorry to hear your camera broke. im lucky with what camera i have ive only ever dropped my camera once and it hit hard but being as rugged as the 7d helped alot

If it's your insurance with MoreThan then you do not have to accept vouchers for Jessops. You can insist on MoreThan giving you a cheque to the same value and then go and spend it somewhere where you can buy what you want at prices lower than Jessops.

But, on renewal, your household insurer may ask if you have had any claims with anybody in the last however many years. The specialist insurer may also contact your household insurer.

To coin a phrase, they're all in it together!

If you claim on your household insurance you loose a year of no claims which is likely to put the price up more than saying you had a claim on a different insurer.

Insurance is so subjective to personal details so your findings might be different to mine.

Well,
We have a conclusion to this episode!
I am now the proud owner of the following!
Nikon D7000
16-85mm f/3.5-5.6
35mm f/1.8
40mm Macro f/2.8

I had a little think about things and I dont really need most of the functions on the D300s and am happy with the handling on the D7000. It also gave me the opportunity to acquire a couple more lenses though I'm still in two minds as to whether to offload them and get the 17-55!
