Last night my Sigma 400mm prime bit the dust, or to be more truthful, the window sill, the wall and the hard tiled floor.

Shades in several pieces, big Hoya daylight filter has bitten the dust (several times by the look of it), the aperture ring feels welded solid and wont budge for love nor money and I'm not sure the autofocus works any more (not willing to risk it on a body).

Thankfully:

A- I hadn't put the camera body on it, just put the lens on the tripod so the camera is fine.

B - I was fully insured on my contents insurance it seems, so far they are being really good about it.

I have to admit I'm going to miss it, but please if you haven't already either make sure your gear is covered for accidental damage (new for old) on your home contents policy or take out specialist insurance, this might be about to cost me over £100 in insurance excess but its a damn sight less painful than having to lay out the cash on a replacement.

I lifted my lowpro bag out of the car boot and slung it over my shoulder only to realise it wasnt zipped shut.. the sigma 120-300 and canon 1dmk2 flew through the air and it was like watching in slow motion as it landed and bounced a few times before the lens smashed off the camera... the 1d was fine.. I am sure it heard it laughing... But the sigma was dead and bits of circuuits and wires sticking out and an end that shouldnt be parted was on the mk2

sent to sigma who fixed and tested the whole thing for 70 quid :)

sigma are good and cheap when fixing.. is yours absoloutly dead?

Yes quite terminally dead, and the insurance company aren't interested in repairing it.. I mean its well over 10 yrs old anyway so not sure they would even have the bits, in fact I can almost hear them laughing at the thought of me asking lol

Don't throw it out. If you're in to E Bay then you'll definitely find a buyer, and probably for stupid money.

A heart stopping moment, I am sure.

 I bet the sound of it hitting the hard floor was painful

Not only me then! I managed exactly that just last week, but thankfully the camera (with the 70-200VRII fitted) was still in my hands. Spose the bag might have been zipped up had I put it a way first though. A couple of things, including the 70-300VR did hit the ground, though all appears just fine, but definitely a heart stopping moment. A lesson learned me thinks

the camera bag thing happened to me once, but luckily i had the padded velcro cushion dividers over the camera and my lenses. so nothing flew out, the only thing that wasn't secure was the nifty fifty which got stuck so didnt drop, even though im looking for any excuse to drop/break that thing so I can convince the mrs to let me buy a 50 1.4 instead! :D
