My work's photography department have just purchased a D3X (for product shots on a website), and our resident photographer was nice enough to let me see and use it briefly today, and all I can say is wow!

The images are simply amazing, he was able to take a pic of me from about a meter away, and then zoom in (on the rear lcd which is stunning) and show me his reflection in my eyeball!

Seriously, if I had 5 grand lying about Id seriously consider jumping ship to Nikon for one of these babies!

Anyone got a 5Dmk2 I can play with to make me love Canon again??

5D 2? Why not a 1Ds 3 or a 1D 4! More alike to the D3 a tleast in terms of feel.

get saving those pennies! Having your dream camera makes a difference I think, you cetainly feel more 'at one' with the equipment.

EspressoJunkie, I'm a Nikon man (but used EOS for 10 years) and the newer po-spec Canons are deffo tempting in terms of what they offer with regard to a lens selection. Handling-wise, it's still very much whether you prefer the two very different designs, but I think I could get used to those massive megapixel counts :)

Very dissapointed with the AF though on the 5D mk2 - not enough focus points and those it does have are very badly placed so really off-centre subjects require focus lock and reframing. Other than that, seems a nice camera to dream about - team it up with a 17-40mm, 24-70mm and a 100-400mm like my mate has and you have a very powerful package :)

Everyone is entitled to a guilty pleasure every now and again!

Now go and wash your mouth out, and never speak of it again. Some things have no place in civilised conversation.

:D

I have two D3's and a D3x and would recommend everyone buy Nikon, but even I think that's overkill for web product-shots...lol
The D3 (and now the D3s if you can find one) is a more use-able tool for real-world applications, I think...

Why bother? According to your camera bag, it's not like you've got a huge investment in Canon kit. If you liked the feel of the Nikon, why not trade up and go over to them?

Because I wouldn't be trading up. Ive contemplated it before but I think going from a 40D to a D200 (which would be all I could afford to change to) would be moving down rather than up.

If I could afford a D300 it would be different, but I couldn't add any money to it, so all id have is the money from selling the 40D, kit lens, and nifty 50 which I doubt would stretch to anywhere near a D300!

I'm happy enough with the 40D, but a lot more people I know shoot nikon so the advantage of a swap would be access to the loan of lenses!

Although generally happy with my Canon set up & certainly can not complain about the quality of the images or kit, I do wish Canon would listen less to the huge commercial pro market & add some artistic touches which Nikon has done for some time now. Simple things like an easy way to get mirror lock up, multiple exposures, and multiple bracketing (rather than just 3 images).

Of no use to the sports & commercial photography, extremely nice to have as a landscape visual arts photographer.

Strange you mention that...

I spoke to some of the Nikon big-wigs at the annual Army Photographer's seminar (and post seminar dinner and P***-up) a while back and during the course of the conversation they made it clear that it was Nikon's (Global) stated aim to get Nikon cameras into the hands of every Sports and Press photographer in the World... To that end, the features on the top cameras are specifically selected to be of use to Professional Sports and Pressmen.

Unacheivable in reality, of course, but I like to see people aim high...

They love us as well - we test their kit beyond their wildest imaginings...

:agree:

I use a D90 for product/web pictures and it's more than ample quality wise.
However the D3, D3s and D3X are brilliant pieces of kit, tbh if I had about 4 grand going spare I would pick up a D3s in a heartbeat :D

I was seriously considering a secondhand D3, in fact I still would get one if it came up at the right price :)

Product shots on a website?

Sounds like someone has bought the most expensive DSLR for a job where even the cheapest DSLR would be overkill. :cuckoo:
You gotta laugh, 24MP resized to 300x300 pixels.

If you could, erm, 'CON-vince' the bosses to buy you a D3x for work, wouldn't you...?

:D
