No
I've been into digital photography for about the past three years now, my first serious DSLR was the Nikon D70.

Happened upon a branch of Jessops yesterday and had a play with the D300, big mistake, as now I want one! :naughty:

I can't afford it in a month of sundays, but the 12 month buy-now, pay-later deal looked mighty tempting at the time!!!

Yep, that big old screen sure does lure you in, especially over a D70 (!)

I can highly recommend the D300, its a fantastic camera. It was a choice of either the D300 or the D3. After having a quick play with the D3 the only thing that I wasn't sure about was the FF sensor, reading all the reviews and tests between the two I decided to go for the D300. It was certainly the right decision, compared to my D200 the 300 was a huge step forward.

Go and put it on the buy now pay later, you won't regret it (y)

Mark:)

Watch those hidden charges, if you take out the 12 month plan, you have to pay the full balance off within the 12 months, then there will be a £29 cost added to the total.
If you go over the 12 months, they charge you interest at an exhorbitant 29.8% which means in 3 years ( 36 payments) you will almost pay double the original cost

Dont think the mrs will let you Dave!
:)

The D70 is an excellent camera

DON'T land yourself with £1000 of debt you can't afford

Your website shows you have talent, but practice and learning more will give a much bigger improvement than simply buying a new camera will

Thankyou for the words of Wisdom DD!

I got as far as the counter in Jessops today with credit card in hand, but they were too busy with customers to serve me! perhaps it was fate...

Thanks for the comments re: my website, I've always done ok with the D70, the lure of the bigger D300 has been quite strong since I had a go with it though!

It really is a stinger if you don't pay within the twelve months!

I might wait for my bonus at Christmas, perhaps it will have come down further in price by then, unless they hike the prices for xmas!!

Bah the Ballgirl is everywhere!

Is BG the missus then?

If so as a D300 user I cannot reccomend you buy one (get her to buy it as a chrissy pressy):)

BG isn't the missus, though she is a rather nice young lady! :D

lol PsiFox. Well about two years ago when I did my photography more often, I considered upgrading to the D200. I've had a break of about two years and now looking at the market, the D300 does look like a great camera, as DD says I think more skill in post processing would serve me better, as I've always shot in RAW and never been quite able to master the post processing, especially in Photoshop.

OMG a relative Newbie who's not simply smitten by the next 'big' thing - TFFT :D

I tend to view equipment as I view cars/driving

You learn enough to warrant buying a car, but an old Escort is more than enough to learn from - you can slide it around and handbrake/J-turn it to your heart's content - and really learn about driving at the same time

Starting off with a Ferrari would in fact hold you back as you couldn't explore its full potential enough to learn much about under/oversteer or what a drift feels like - not on normal roads anyway

In time, and if you're interested in driving, you'll probably outgrow the Escort - so that's the time to 'upgrade'; but it's still not worth hawking your soul for a Ferrari

A D70 is a lot better than the analogy to an Escort; I did my first 3 years as a Pro tog with a D100 (which was actually bettered by the cheaper D70), and it was fine for the job. Eventually though, I needed more options and more pixels for larger & larger work - so I upgraded then

Keep a sensible head young togger - spend spare pennies on trips out & about to actually use what you already have, and when you've mastered it and need more just hope to Hell that Ballgirl wants a toy of her own to justify your new camera!!!

So endeth the lesson

I can't agree more with this. As an option though, look for a 12 month interest free credit card and pay it off at 83.33 per month and you can stretch it out a bit. I got my D300 today and so far, all I've done is read the instruction manual and not taken an actual photo (only the draft ones it lets you take with no memory card fitted)

Initial impressions tell me that for £1000 (well, almost) I could have spent that on something a lot worse. If you can afford it, go buy it.

I'm sorry if this seems a little harsh - but comments like 'If you can afford it buy it' make me go :nuts::nuts:

It's like saying... 'If you can afford an Hassleblad & digi-back go buy one' - but what if you don't NEED the damn thing

This chap has a perfectly good camera and is producing fine work with it, having a few more pixels won't make THAT much difference to him with what he likes to shoot. Many, most even, of the other D300's features are not necessary to him taking great pictures of his chosen subject matter

Buying a D300 now will be a waste of money he hasn't got spare, and it's highly unlikely he'll notice the difference enough to make him not feel stupid for going into debt to buy it

Come on chaps - let's see some common sense here - it's not like he has a Canon and therefore MUST upgrade FFS

Have to say I am agreeing with DiddyDave on this one. I have a D70 Then last year got the D300. It is a very good camera no doubt about that. I like everything about it so far. Funny thing is I am starting to use the D70 again! Cause I like it! Only thing is the iso on the D70 & I do a lot of low light stuff. I found the D300 quite a big learning curve after the D70 too & I think my pics went backwards for a while. Think long & hard before parting with your money.

I have a rule when it comes to cameras, cars and stuff like that - if I can't afford to pay cash then I can't afford to buy it.

As DD says, the D70 is an excellent camera, no point in upgrading just because there's something new and shiny :)wave: to the D300->D700 early adopters), there will be another latest, greatest camera along in a few months and another one after that.

If you really feel the urge to upgrade, you could always get a D200- the difference between what you'd get for your D70 and what that would cost would only be a couple of hundred pounds.....

The D300 has a ton of stuff the D70 doesn't not to mention the new sensor, active d lighting, better high iso quality and strangly it seems better resolution than the D3 (yes I know that sounds daft, but it's being talked about on a lot websites it's to do with pixel density as I understand it.) Anyway it's a damm good camera. Wayne

HeHeHe...if only I could afford everything I bought

Mark:)

I have a rule for everything "technology":) If you really want it that badly, save up the damn money first! All my camera gear was paid for up-front, and I don't owe anyone a penny for it!!

It really does save making stupid purchasing decisions....

Well those extra posts since I went to bed lastnight have made me smile!

I am usually quite impulsive with new purchases but no matter how excellent the D300 is, DD's opinion is right. I think at this point extra effort with photoshop and post processing will serve me far better!

Makes me wonder about the chap in front of me at Jessops, the one who has saved me a few quid!...he was buying a D700 body and a large Nikon lens that had a £1200 price tag on it. Wonder if he was paying cash! :D

I bet that £1,200 lens was the 70-200 VR lens that I really want to get when I get my D300 next month.

I'm going from a D40 to a D300. Should give me lots more control and options to play with.

I Still use my D70s for landscape, I like the results, IMO they are better than the D300 or D200.

Man am I gonna get battered for that.........
