Has anyone else moved from Canon crop to Nikon crop 2nd body and regretted it??

Hello all,

I love my 5dMkii and woudlnt change it for anything ..... except maybe a D800 if its as good as they say its going to be !!

So im in the position now where i need to buy a new 2nd body for doing weddings.

I was thinking of a 550d. Cheap, decent, simply for attaching a WA lens and snapping.

OR, if i were to move over to the Nikon in the summer do i now go for something comparable ... D5100 ??

It doesnt bother me that i may have a canon and Nikon around my neck and playing about with different controls, thats not an issue, what im mainly interested in is the difference in "feel" and usability of the lower end DSLR's of Canon and Nikon.

Anyone moved across to Nikon and thought about going back ??

I'm not sure if my input is all that valid as I used a 20D for 5-6 years (I think) then went to a D90 (to share lenses with the in-laws) but it really wasn't that pleasant of an experience!
Controls wise, yes the 90 was easy to pick up but quality wise it obviously just didn't do it for me compared even to my 20D.

So I bought a 50D and was a lot happier! (Until I got my 5D mki!!)

What about a 40D? I bought one of these for the missus and at around £300 I think they are an absolute steal.....

Anyway as I said I guess my comments come from an equipment level one step up from your considerations but hopefully useful!?
 
I thought about a cheaper good camera, but my plan is to get a D800 so moving to Nikon now will save me a bit of cash as i wont be chopping in 2 cameras come the summer.

Plus im after an SD based camera
 
I think you are forgetting the more important issue of your user name on this forum which surely precludes you from moving over to the dark side? :D

I have no idea re your original question, however I imagine having a backup body means you can also swap lenses etc, which won't be possible with Nikon and Canon glass.

If you need a backup body, in my opinion, you need a Canon now. To save money you get a body second hand either on here or with warranty from someone like mpb, and then sell on when you make the changeover for little or no loss. That's what I'd do in your shoes (I have no experience of wedding photography or paid photography of any sort).
 
Ok I am a Nikon owner but I can't see the reason for getting a different make of camera. Its not just the camera but a complete set of lenses as well. So stay with the make you have or completely change everything and go with Nikon, don't mix the two.

Earlier in the year i had to use a 1100d and managed to get some shots that made their album.
Trouble is, its far too small and not the best to rely on every time.
