Im looking at splashing out but want to be sure, in what I am doing.
I want the lens but as people say it is a lot of money, but then you get what you pay for right?

Low light events, parties, weddings
portraits, it hits the ideal range on my crop
Lens is a keeper for if/when I upgrade (don't tell the wife:naughty:)

Its heavy
costly
water resistent doesn't matter as the current camera isn't

Anyway, bottom line, am I doing the right thing investing:shrug:
 
I've worked my way up the ladder on glass as funds have allowed, if you have the money now I'd say L glass is well worth the money and will work well with future camera upgrades - you won't regret it!
 
Normally I'd advise against the 24-70 on a crop body, but it sounds like you won't miss the wide angle range you'd get on an EF-S mount lens such as the 15-85 or 17-55. With that in mind, and if you can afford it, it's an excellent lens (especially if you plan to go full frame in the future).

I'd have a serious think about whether the 17-55 is more suitable for your camera, as it's a lot of cash to splash out. However, if you are certain the 24-70 is the ideal lens for you, you won't regret it.

At the moment I have the kit lens for wider range but hope to replace that with say a 10-22 as I also like landscapes. So the 3 lenses should do me for a while.

my other lens is a 70-300 is usm which is great on the crop I use it for rugby games
 
The kit lens isn't particularly wide, so the 10-22 would be a good purchase. With that and the 24-70 you'd have virtually all of the lower range covered, but the question is whether the 24-70 is wide enough as a walkabout lens - you don't want to be constantly swapping lenses if you can avoid it.
 
If you can afford it & your looking to perhaps upgrade your body later I'd say go for it.

I've hired a 24-70 & loved it on my 7D, it's the perfect focal range that I need & I have a Sigma 10-20 if I need to go wider.
The weight never put me off, I carried around for a whole day in London & the weight issue never crossed my mind.

Soon as I have enough pennies saved I'll be buying one.
 
I've used my 24-70 on every XXD that Canon have made almost (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and now 7D). I won't say it's my favourite lens - that honour goes to the 10-22mm that I partner it with, but it is my next most used lens. I find it just fine as a walkaround lens, and incredible quality. It's a large, heavy lens, but sharp as a tack. Even though it's not as wide on a crop, for most normal travel shooting, it's 38mm equiv at the wide end and 112mm at the long, which is actually a quite useful range, covering moderate wide to almost any portrait or, short/med telephoty requirement. Combined with its exceptional quality and f/2.8 aperture, you won't be unhappy. I bought mine with a view that one day I'd use it on a full-frame. Hasn't happened yet, but it's outlasted my ownership of quite a few DSLRs, which says something.

Thanks everyone, I feel more at ease now parting with my hard earned, now how do I tell the wife I also want the 10-22 :D
