I was looking at the Canon 24-70L, but its a bit of a financial reach, but a shop pointed me in the direction of this new sigma leans claiming it to be as good as the canon at 2/3rd the price.
 
i have the cheaper of the two models

£300 new

£600 new

not sure which way round they call the lens without looking at sigma's site


i have tge louder version and cheaper ie the £300 it is a sharp lens

2 of my images just got throgh as winners this week at our local club and one of the other lads has got some serious l lenses although i cant comapre them myself the lens i got are £300 ish new and i am really impressed by it

if i do upgrade i will look at the canon but also the sigma quieter lens

I've got the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro version.
For the money, it's bang on. I paid £220 2nd hand.
It's slow, noisy and big.

But BLOODY sharp and produces cracking shots!
 
Thanks, I'm looking at the IF with HSM, which is the more expensive option. The DP review is of the EX version not the newer IF. I can't find many reviews of the IF version or specifically a comparision with the Canon.

Wouldn't have thought there's much in it TBH.

Slow focus shouldn't be a huge problem, unless you are doing motorsports, wildlife etc.

For portraits, landscapes etc, USM/HSM isn't really a must. Nice to have however......
 
I have one for the Nikon - assuming it will perform the same on the Canon, you will not be disappointed. Great lens.
 
The Canon has fallen in price and you can now get them second hand on here and other places for £700 maybe a shade less so if the Sigma is £600 new i would rather have the second hand Canon providing it is in good nick. In most of the reviews i've read the sigma is decent but not as good as the canon.
 
A good second hand Canon is tempting too. Does anyone know if the Sigma has weather sealing? Does my 7D have weather sealing come to think about it?
 
What degree of sealing? I don't usually shoot in the rain/snow, but winter approaches, so a reasonably sealed body and lens adds some degree of flexiblity.
 
Have you considered Tokina? I got the 28-80mm f2.8 AT-X 280 AF PRO and it's a beauty! £300 second hand if you can find one :)

EDIT: Full frame also :)
 
The Canon is about £860 new now so I'm not sure I would want to go £600 on the Sigma without trying it first. I have the Sigma EX DG and the Canon lens, the Canon is far superior imho.
 
How much is canon 28-70mm L worth second hand, and how much value will that sigma retain a few years later? I don't think both answers will be 2/3rd or near it! The old one goes very cheap already.

I could only guess if Sigma has improved their 24-70, but their EX DG Macro was The worst lens I've seen so far.
 
If I remember correctly, the HSM one is regarded as pretty poor, I read a review of one on here and it was less than complimentary!

I got a non-hsm one for about £200, which is a good deal. If I was looking at spending £600 though, I'd save a little more and get the Canon L one without a doubt!

The Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for £400
 
Harmless ..................... yet another 7D owner ................... I have the Canon 24-105 F/4 L picked up on TP for £600 and a superb lens, so only a little stretch above the Sigma and you stay with Cannon?

The 7D as some weather sealing, but like so many, is not waterproof.

Where are you located?

I'm located in South London. I have considered the Canon 24-105, but I thought about the 24-70 to compliment my 70-300, but the quality step may make this a worthwhile choice, but the extra stops hmmmm

2.8->4 is one stop. Unless you are pushing the boundaries of what the camera/lens combo can do and absolutely need 2.8 to push the shutter speeds as far as you can to freeze action (and can't do that by pushing the ISO one stop further), the IS of the 24-105 will give you a far more useful 3ish stops of light. IMHO of course....
 
Well now I'm plunged into indecision. Any downside to the Tokina, which I had never considered before?

To be honest it does suffer from purple fringing a little more but it's quite an easy fix. Other than that, it's a solid and sharp as nobody's business lens at a crazy price. Tokina don't seem to do many Full Frame lenses these days I've noticed, well ones that I'm interested in.

Here's an example of how sharp it can be and I find it gives very true colour representation (lost a little bit of sharpness from downsizing), but below is a tight crop showing the purple fringing (I didn't do any anti-fringing on it).
