Has Flickr gone mad?

Yes
Normally I get a couple of views here and there of stuff on my Flickr account, but yesterday I had 165 views and of these, 105 were of the same photo... this one

It's not an earth-shatteringly brilliant photo, but why all the activity? Should I suspect foul play with a butterfly on a daisy fetishist on the loose? Or has Flickr gone wonky?

I suspect someone somewhere has a link to it. Suspect foul play! You should watermark all your images!

Can you see the referring page that led to all the hits in your stats? (might need 'pro' to get the stats page?)

Hmmm how would I go about tracking down the suspected culprit (allegedly)

Sorry no idea - I wouldn't put any of my stuff anywhere near Flckr.

Thanks for the lead. Having looked, the referring domain is Flickr

Now I am confused. This is a print of the info.

Is there an alternative to then be able to post my stuff on here?

Any web hosting or even Talkphotography's own galery will cover that, you don't need to to be part of a photo shring community to post your pictures on the internet.

Persoanally, I wouldn't worry about it I'd be pleased someone liked my picture and that other people were seeing it.

This may be me putting 10 and 21 together and getting -34, but at the minute in the UK there is a "big butterfly count" going on, I think there is a website for it. I heard about it on the radio this morning, its supposed to be bring awarness to the reducing butterfly population. People are encouraged to go out and count what butterflies they see, people could be using flicker to identify them , although there is supposed to be an identification chart on the website.

Just an idea.

Is it a rare butterfly?

But if they are linking direct to the picture then nobody looking at it will know he took the picture... Hard to be pleased someone likes your pics when nobody knows its your pic? :)

I take it its not rare then.

Missed that post for some reason.

Perhaps the flower is rare :)

If they link directly to the JPEG (like we do to get the pictures to show here) then Flickr doesn't record that in the stats. It's visits to that images Flickr page that are logged.
The stats are useful, but no good for identifying if someone has linked directly to your image.

watermark your images you want to retain some sort of control over.

also turn off "Who can access your original image files?" and "Who can share your photos or video?" that way people can only get the small default image displayed on the image page (unless youve enabled larger previews) by stripping it out of the HTML.

Have you posted it to any busy groups?

Last time I posted an image to the Strobist group, the views were way, way above the number I usually get.

It seems to have stabilised now - 120 views in total?

Some lovely photos in your photostream - are you using Holomatix or tone mapping on some of those bug pictures? There is something unusual about the colour on some of them that I can't quite put my finger on. :)

Yes it has quietened down thankfully. Today's photo is tomorrows fish 'n' chip wrapper :D

Thanks for your kind comment regarding my bug pictures. I dont have Holomatix and I dont know how to use tone mapping, so i'm wondering about the unusual colour that you mention. I like to think I use a pretty standard form of PP and use it all the time as an action I recorded. I just tweak the saturation, levels and curves when necessary. These adjustments are usually only very small eg saturation from +20 to +10 for instance.

If you could let me know some of the images that are unusual, I'll take a look to see if there is any common element that is causing them to be unusual. Any help here would be much appreciated

I am now expert at all.But if you posted this to a popular group or groups I am sure you would get that many hits.
Regardless what you may think the photo is simply stunning.
Bask in the glory.
Well captured.

This one for example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nigpd/4696600438/in/set-72157624316504758/

On reflection I think it might be a combination of good framing, increased saturation, and a fair amount of sharpening - it gives it a lot of definition, contrast and punch.

Quite a few of the others have a nice warm tone - like this one:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nigpd/4761011409/in/set-72157619731184574/

Is that related to the time of day you took them at?

I do tend to use edge mask sharpening and yes, a lot of the bug shots are taken very early in the morning in good light. The bugs tend to be a lot more docile at that time, plus you get nicce warm light

If it made Expolre, it'd have a damn site more than 100-200 views, so we can rule that out. If someone's added this to their favourites/gallery and they're a very active account they can drive traffic to your image, which is what this looks like to me. That or it's a group thing.

Flickr Stats won't record links to the .jpeg hosted on farm.flickr (as someone else mentioned) so the views you're getting are to the photo page, and hence people know it's you - don't worry on that count.

Whilst we're on the subject, if you reserve rights on all the images you upload flickr, for anyone except you, getting the link to the direct jpeg is tricky - they're very good at obfusticating the link, and whereas the mantra "if it's shown in the browser, you can save it locacally" holds true, it's not easy from Flickr these days.

I would suggest that someone has commented/favourited/added it to a gallery and I would revel in the attention :)

Oh, and damm fine shot - Great work!

Thanks for filling in my knowledge gaps concerning Flickr. I understand a little more now about how it works :bonk:

Things have calmed down now so, as I said before, my todays photo is tomorrows fish 'n' chip wrapper

Have you ever considered that its a damn good pic :)

Thanks for the comment, but I thought it was only ok-ish and nothing too special. In this instance, I may be a little bit better than I think I am
