Has the D700 had its highspot for S/H value

I see some D700 bodies are coming down in price! - well on the S/H market they have - although new prices have risen some 10%

What would you do IF you wanted to go FF and was in no major rush....wait for D800 or whatever its successor will be or buy S/H now......I am not sure a New D700 is worth the current asking for a UK model.

The successor is on its way, seems to be a general consensus BUT the fact that not many places have it may well be down to the troubles Japan is going through rather than the model has ended production.......

The successor must be on its way, but don't forget the new value will be much nearer to 2k rather than the current prices of the D700. If you really don't mind waiting, then of course the D800 seems a good option, and is likely to provide absolutely stellar performance judging from the technological leaps that Nikon is making from model to model. The second-hand value of the D700 at the moment is ridiculous, artificially inflated to an extent, and certainly worth waiting out if you aren't desperate to get your hands on it. Maybe the best time is either once the used market has stabilised and you get a good one, or if you wait long enough for the D800 so that the remaining D700s are sold off cheap (if the D800 doesn't take enough of your fancy to justify it over the 700).

Lots of options, you'll be happy whichever way.

With new D700's currently available at around £1479 it is bound to affect the 2nd-hand market, which often pitches good examples at a similar price.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing - waiting, not paying a premium for something that's being replaced very shortly. Also VAT comes into it for me, so buying 2nd hand isn't economic anyway.

I am thinking of buying some FF lenses soon though, despite not having a camera, but that's just for tax reasons as my company year ends in a month.

The fact that there are still new cameras to be bought despite the panic-buying a few months back shows that they are making them again; as Nikon weren't exactly producing or stockpileing vast numbers pre-tsunami anyway, its hard to tell, but all pre-quake inventory must have gone long ago by now!

Having used one for over 2 years I can assure you it is worth every single penny!!!

At this point I'd wait. It is a 3 year old camera give or take so the D800 should be following soon enough. The D300 is also due for a replacement. A camera with the build quality and features of the D300 plus the fairly amazing D7000 sensor would be an excellent alternative to the D700, especially if you consider the cost/weight savings you can have by using DX lenses.
