Yes
Guys,

Is there an easy way to work out the focal length comparison between a Nikon Full Frame and a Hassleblad H4D?

For example:

85mm on FF = XXmm on H4D?

Curious to know the following focal lengths:

70mm

85mm

135mm

Ta!

Gary.
PS - No. Not yet :D

50mm on 35mm = 80mm on 6x6cm so multiply by 1.6x

Therefore:

70mm = 110mm
85mm = 135mm (140mm)
135mm = 210mm

Usually the formats ratios are

50mm - 75mm 6x4.5cm
50mm - 80mm 6x6cm
50mm - 90mm 6x7cm

Okay, I'm a dick, I missed the H4D bit, I'll e back in a mo!

I thought it went the other way with Medium Format to FX. So a 50 mm MF 6 x 6 would have an equivalent focal lenght of 26.5 mm on a 35mm?

Originally the image size for a standard lens was approximately the diagonal of the frame size. So for a 35mm frame it was the square root of (24x24mm) + (36x36mm) which equated to 43mm which was eventually rounded up to 50mm.

The H4D 40MP sensor is 33mm x 44mm so is a little less than twice the size of a 35mm frame, but to get the approximate ratio you have to get the square root of (33x33mm) + (44x44mm) which equates to 55mm.

This gives a ratio of approximately 1:1.25 so your lenses should be

50 = 60mm
70 = 85mm
85 = 105mm
135 = 170mm

Not that wide I'm afraid! We aren't going that way, therefore a 50mm FX lens will equate to approximately 80mm on 6x6cm and a 30mm FX will be approx 50mm on 6x6cm

Is the H4D a full 6x6 (56mm x 56mm for those that didn't know) sensor? If not then it's not a straight comparison against 6x6.

fair enough ;) quite happy to be wrong on that one and was confusing myself (its easy thinking about it)

So from this thread it looks like £13k is about to be spent on an H4D :lol:

What lenses are you thinking of?

Wish I had the bread!

Ed you just killed my brain. I'll just print your list! :)

Presume those focal lengths on a blad are going to be ace for headshots? The 70mm equiv I would probably use for my full body shots.

Gary.

Simple pythagorus theorum really. Just trying to find out the length of the hypotenuse

Yes, the lenses you have specified would be the babies!

Not just yet mate but there is a blad fund building. I think I will start with my 85mm equiv as it's used for all my headshots at the moment and I can also get away with using it for full length and on white studio shots too.

Are Hassleblads really all that for the money?

A 40MP image almost twice the sensor size of a full frame DSLR with an 12 stop dynamic range and a flash sync of 1/800th would do nicely for me if I could afford it!

Yes :cool:

As a very rough rule of thumb (and no I haven't working this out) take 1/4 - 1/3 off the focal length to get close to a "full frame" equivalent. So the 80 feels like a 50/60 on the D3, the 150 like a 100/120 etc.

150 makes a gorgeous portrait lens. You can use it for full length if you are comfortable shouting.

Tried a 300 last week and it was jolly nice but for full length you'll probably need to phone your model.

80's not bad for the kit lens.

Wake up Kev, read post #4 ;)

That'll learn me for skim reading won't it.

Not sure if this will work or not but might be a cheap enough way of running a test.

Have you still got your Mamiya Gary? When me 645 back worked on my Bronica I made a little mask up which I stick between the ground glass and the WLF or the prism. You could make up a mask for the size of the Hasselblad sensor and put it in your Mamiya. You can then see how the angle of view changes with your MF lenses.

To make the mask I measured the area of the ground glass that it was going to sit in and drew a rectangle in photoshop the same size and filled it black. I then drew another rectangle which was 645 and put it in the middle and made it white. Printed it out, cut around the black bit and then cut out the white bit. It might not be 100% accurate but it's certainly close enough.

I'd consider one if I could stick my L's on it :lol:

Bit of a waste of time I suspect, not sure your L glass could resolve 40mp;)

It's all a wind up Didzis, you'd have to be a bit mental to put anything other than matched glass on an MF body, they're too unforgiving not to IMO.
