Have I bought a duff lens?

Yes
I purchased a Canon 135 f/2.0L 2nd hand from e of the bay which arrived this morning.
I excitedly unboxed it, marveled at it's beauty and attached it to my 5DII.
Checked peripheral illumination which showed it as a 135L and proceeded to take a few shots of the dog to make sure all was well.

Everything seemed fine with quick and quiet focus and nice looking shots on the viewfinder (and later on the PC they look good too!) but....

When I came to take the lens off it rotates past the point where it should come loose. The red dot on the lens passes the red dot on the camera and the lens is still attached. It takes a bit of wiggling to get it to come away from the body.

On closer inspection the area looks a bit rough and worn around the edges. The contacts are fine it seems.
I very much doubt it is meant to look like this so if anyone can confirm what their 135 looks like or if anyone has seen anything similar and can let me know what's up!

Sounds like a broken stopper pin on the side of the lens allow it to over rotate

Look on the edge and see if its missing

Here is what you are looking for

If its broken off you will be looking at a trip to Canon for a New Mount, about £120 on average varies a bit by lens

That almost looks like someone has cannibalised the mount from another lens to get yours working. Do the screws on the mount look as if the have been tampered with?

The screws and everything look fine, no scratching or any other signs of tampering.

Bingo! There is indeed a missing pin. Thanks for that Richard.
Time to email the seller...

Yep If its Ebay I would be looking at a Return or a refund to cover the cost of a new mount, seller must have known there was a problem with it...

shame but such a simple little thing can **** up the lens good and proper

Good Luck Getting it sorted, at least you will have Ebay/Paypal on your side for sure.

It can also b****r up the camera. One of my Nikon lenses had the same issue and blew the camera up when the lens span and the contacts on the lens and body hit the wrong pins.

Would have been a £600+ bill if Nikon hadn't have footed it, due to a known design fault with the lens causing it.

Out of interest which lens?

Well the seller says it was fine when it left him (surprisingly) but has agreed to a refund.

Shame as its a gorgeous lens!

That's weird. It's not the kind of damage that occurs in a fall or in an accident, so I'd say he already new.

Full or partial refund?

Full refund with postage costs. Are you thinking guilty conscious?

Glad its getting sorted, shame it sounds as apart from the pin it was a nice lens, but you really dont need the hassle of trying to get the mount replaced.

Sure the perfect one will pop along for you soon, good luck with the hunt.

Glad you are getting a refund as it also looks like someone has taken a hacksaw to the black plastic opening. It is the wrong shape and has very rough edges.

Glad it's sorted, but just to confirm Vaughan's view, that does not look like an original 135/2 mount. Very rough at the edges and frankly just the wrong shape! Looks like someone's been at a similar mount with a Dremmel or similar.

Quick picture of the mount of mine by way of comparison:

Thanks guys. It is a shame because I really want this lens and it was perfect apart from the mount issue.
I think I will keep an eye on MPB and the classifieds, gutted I missed the one a few days ago.

David, cheers for that photo for comparison, mine is indeed in much worse condition but I didn't realise how bad until I saw yours.

Make sure you send it Royal Mail SPECIAL deliver insured for the value of the lens

You get a tracking number and it must be signed for

I made the mistake of returning a lens normal post some years ago

And yes , the seller said he never received it and refused a refund :(

A costly error on my side

Special Delivery is definitely the one to use and it only gets expensive when the weight starts to go up, i.e. 2kg. Covers £500 by default and is tracked all the way and I am led to believe even separated from the normal post to some degree.

However, for cheap items (under £46 I think) normal first class with proof of postage is fine as long as you can prove what you have sent (eBay listing will do) and the person receiving confirms they haven't received when asked.

Here's another pic of it before I sent it back.

It's in much worse condition then Davids yet the seller says that he never had a problem with it!

I sent it by Royal Mail Special Delivery, it cost £10.75 which includes an extra quid that I paid to have the insured value upped from £500 to £1000.
Fingers crossed he doesn't mess about when he gets the lens back.

Def looks different ....

Hope everything goes okay and you don't have any issues.

Have you already opened a claim with Ebay/Paypal.?

If not I would recommend doing so in case the seller decides to get stupid over it, you cannot lose as it Faulty/Not As Described, Ebay will ask you to send it back by RMSD, and you will be refunded as soon as it arrives (Or if the seller refuses delivery), as long as ebay can see a delivery attempt was made you win.

Does the seller have a blemish free history and have you checked his past sales to see if he has tried this before with the same lens?.

I've checked his past sales and he's not tried something like this in the past. He also has 100% feedback.
It's a genuine sale, he stated in the lens description that he's selling all his Canon gear as he has switched to Nikon (which I can see in his feedback he has been buying Nikon stuff).

I haven't opened a case yet as he has agreed to a full refund but if there is any funny business then I will open one because as you say it's not as described so should be simple to resolve.

Looks like someone has attached a mount from another lens and modified the opening. Hope you get your money back

I received a full refund this morning inc the postage costs.

Seller admits that a pin seems to be missing but claims that he can't see any wear or tear? :bonk:

Anyway, at least the matter is put to bed.

An eBayer that does it credit by the sound of it, especially paying the postage as although it had a fault the seller doesn't have to pay for return costs.

Will look over the fact on whether then knew it was not right and was trying it on...

Glad it is all sorted for you, now onwards and upwards looking for a better one!

RMSD is totally separated from all other mail, it's recorded that is not, recorded is not safer than other mail, the only difference is . if it manages to arrive they have to sign for it.

Exactly. And the Proof of Postage is the key bit of paper you need when sending via normal first or second class as that is the key part of evidence that Royal Mail need when you go for compensation if the item never arrived.
In my experience they process the claims fairly quickly too. I even claimed a few weeks ago for a ParcelForce 48 delivery that took 2 hours over the 48 to arrive!

Yeah its a real b****r when a seller knowingly sells you a duffer to pull a fast one, then when you challenge the sale refuses to give a refund, I would advise buying through Paypal for any used sales in future
