Hello all

I am new to photography, well not totally, I did dabble with it for must be getting on 20 year or so ago, I wasn't too bad back then, so I was told, mind you, most probably friends who didn't want to upset me.
I don't know if it's in my interest to ask this question or maybe this advice, I was looking at one of two Cameras to buy one was the Olympus epl1 the other the Leica digital V-lux 2 , I made my choice and bought one of them.
Can I ask opinions of which one is the best one or out of those cameras which should I have purchased? the Leica V-lux2 seems to do everything but it's fixed lens, Olympus Pen small camera but separate lenses

Thanks
lee

Do not try and seek the perfect camera. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
What truth?
There is no spoon.
There is no spoon?
Then you'll see, that it is not that the camera is perfect, it is only that it is the right one for you.

As has already been suggested; what is best?

Sorry if this seems offensive but if you wanted a view on which is the "best" (what ever that means) camera, why have you already bought one of them and then asked the question?

Just go and enjoy taking photos and then post some here.

Dave

of course you can ask.
sure someone who knows will be along shortly.
Welcome to the funny farm.:D

Back on topic, the Leica is an over-branded Panasonic - and a glorified compact at that, with a tiny sensor. You will pay twice as much as the Panasonic branded version, because it has a red blob on the front, but neither version is a serious camera for an enthusiast. Too limited.

At least the Olympus has a half decently sized sensor and is a cool and innovative design. I think the Pano GF1 is the better choice in that style of camera, but from your choice of two, I hope you bought the Olympus.

Thanks everyone!

No offence taken here, I did ask for Sort of advice

Yes, I bought the Olympus epl1, they also sold me a Brand new VF2 for a £100, I was chuffed to bits when I found out what they cost, it does help to have one of these on the camera I recon, well it's helping me anyway, they gave me a mmf-2 adaptor with the lenses, told me I would be able to fit lots of other lenses on the Pen and also use AF.
I have only had the camera a week so I am still reading through the manual and playing about with it, I ain't no professional, but the pictures I have took so far look brilliant to me, and that's letting the camera do the work, I am really happy with it, Cant wait to go out and about with it, There is one thing not so happy with, it hasn't got any way to operate the shutter with electron remote control switch wire/lead

the mmf-2 is a handy adapter as you can get normal four-thirds mounts olympus lenses to go on the front and sigma ones too.

have a look on this page linky link link this is SRB from luton way as they do adapters for a variety of camera mounts and other bits and bobs, i can now put my canon lens on the front of my ep-1, or nikon lenses, OM lens (nik and OM are to the Canon mount so can put OM lenses on my Canon's, yey)

Hello KiKo,
Thanks for the link. they sale everything there, bewildering sometimes ,I am very much an armature at this.

I found out through various web forums that camera shops are selling the epl1with no adaptors just the Micro 4/3 lenses, earlier kits had this adaptor as standard, when I checked the price I made sure they sold the kit with this adaptor included even though I had the dedicated Micro lenses in the kit.

Lots of people use the Pancake lens, I am thinking on buying one but I don't know really if it's worth it, I am thinking on the Panasonic 20mm f1.7

If you're happy with the feel of the camera you bought and the results you're getting from it, you made the right decision.

but the pictures I have took so far look brilliant to me,

Theres a lot of people spent a lot of money and a lot of time and effort.. But still can't say that... So your winning :)

Thanks everyone , most encouraging

Could I go back to what I said about the pancake lens, advice! Should I get one for my kit? while I still have a few quid of my budget left. I will admit, not totally sure of the Benefit of this little lens, people seem to rave about them though.

advice is most appreciated

Thanks

The 20mm f1.7is an excellent lens, you won't be disappointed with the results, especially if you have the m.Zuiko 14-42mm on at the moment - you will be very pleasently suprised with the performance of the Panasonic lens I guarantee!

The thing about the pancake is it's f/1.7, and obviously pocketable. But unless you use it at very low f/numbers (for shallow depth of field, and low light situations) it will be no different to any other lens when set at 20mm.

oh dear, recon could be alot of conflicting advice info happening here:) never mind though, more info the better I recon.

looking at the two available, 20mm f1.7 from panasonic & 17mm f2.8 f2.8 from olympus i would get the panasonic, auto focus is quicker, quieter
(meaning you don't hear it during video, i'll get an example hopefully tomorrow if i'm not too busy, the only example is my nephew singing and dancing which i'd rather not have online)
and you get better depth of field control.

Google/ebay ep1 remote shutter release £3 to £7
