...
so am thinking about getting a tablet..
was thinking about Xoom but then saw this video of samsung tab 10.1

looks really nice...

but there is one more tablet coming..
HP TouchPad
I have to say I do like WebOS.

Lets wait and see what prices will be :)

I think the longer you wait on tabs, the better choice/performance you will have...

The later you leave it the better choice you'll have. A tablet could be the "Must Have" for Christmas this year. We could see some serious price competition around then.

The Xoom sounds good, the current Samsung Tab is excellent so the next/bigger one should be too, plus there's a whole load just about to be released from a bunch of other brands so we're about to have more choice than we need!
For the price you could do a lot worse than checking out the Archos 70 and 101's.

I should get some advance notice of some of the uk launches so I'll try to keep you updated!

bigger choice is better choice ;)

dont like screen on archos 101...

and please do inform me(us) about any uk launches of some tablets ;)

I do hope that after ipad2 pricing, prices of new tablets from HP and Samsung will be closer to it then much more....

still think that galaxy tab is bit overpriced....

Its the Asus Transformer or Sony S1 (when more details are released) for me

BTW, I have the Advent Vega with a custom ROM installed... I don't travel to work (work from home) so no commuting time and I'm finding I'm not using it much. Works well, but since my PC is on 24/7, I find it's easier to walk to the office if I want to look anything up. It's much quicker to type on a real keyboard...

No one mentioned iPad yet? You might also get paralysis and not buy anything in July and decide to wait for the next releases.....plump for one and go for it.

I agree with other comments here.

We are experiencing the first wave of Android tablets but frankly they are overpriced. Android tablets will become commoditised but we haven't reached that point yet.

This Christmas will be a key point and then a year from now they will be significantly cheaper.

I'm personally holding back a bit - not sure how long (I love gadgets!!) - perhaps 6 - 9 months. I think they are a great tool for togs.

In my mind I'm thinking £300 for a really good tablet but we aren't there yet :(

:agree:

No matter when or what you buy there'll always be a newer/shinier/faster/cheaper one alone shortly after, buy the one that suits your needs at the time and then forget about it.

That's true with things that have been out a while, like if you wanted a new PC, or an ipod, a stereo, a tv etc, but tablets seem to be growing up a lot and a few new ones are coming out. If you need one now, or if you can afford to keep upgrading, then just get what you fancy. But if you want it to last a good few years and you're not in a rush it might be worth waiting a few months.

I sold my Advent Vega yesterday. Never used the darned thing....

you like that samsung tab?

I tried one out in curry's it felt really cheap and nasty

also with the new apple patent you might find that some tabs start to get a bit limited with their functionality depending on how apple play it - they might restrict certain features or just charge a ton for the company to license the feature and it ending up impacting the overal product cost

What have they patented, specifically? And what products could cost more?

I don't know exactly, the patent terminology is very confusing but from what I read they've been given a very broad patent to capacitive touch screen devices which covers any device that uses a swipe or pinch to move through a web page, so effectively this can apply to tablets as well as smartphones.

They'll no doubt license this to the competition in the same way that nokia now license a lot of stuff to them

If they have that patent which holds up:
1) Anything you've bought will remain yours and won't go up in price
2) Anything you've bought that has that functionality won't lose that functionality
so if you've bought/are buying something, there's nothing to worry about.

It's also unlikely the cost of Androids etc will rise significantly anyway. The costs would remain competitive in order for the devices to sell.

It could lead to brands pulling out of the market, which is bad for everyone except Apple.

That's a fair point, however in a 'few months' it will still be relatively new technology, so anything bought then will still be superceded relatively quickly.

PHEW!!!!!!

Thank god you told me this, my wife just bought an android phone and I was seriously worried that it would stop working instantly today now that the patent had been granted! Either that or I thought someone might knock on my door and ask for some extra money to keep it.

:)

Worth waiting to the autumn to see if the Amazon Tablet materialises and brings a real purpose to the tablet use.

Thank god you told me this
Hey you're welcome, I'm glad I could put your mind at rest :p

Obvious as my point was, that is practically what your post said...
you might find that some tabs start to get a bit limited with their functionality
So how exactly are they going to become limited with their functionality, if they already have the functionality, and it's not going?

well mainly because not every functionality and every product has been created and released yet, so this could affect future development

I didn't say that specifically I was referring to future development because I assumed nobody would think that all of a sudden anything they already owned would stop working

Yes it could. The worst case is that fewer decent tablets will be released, that will limit the apps market, but I'm sure something would have happened by now if that was likely.

As for future functionality, I don't really understand the concern. If one manufacturer develops something, it may not be available on other manufacturers' devices - it probably won't even be on their own old devices.

Which screen is the best for photographers?

I saw a review comparing the Samsung Galaxy and the iPad2, and the guy (a self confessed iPad lover) preferred the Samsung display. But that was for general use, what about for photography?

I just saw this review which suggests the iPad has the more accurate screen.

Can anyone with something like an Asus Transformer say how accurate they've managed to get the colour?

Nothing could happen before now as apple only got the patent approved yesterday. Now essentially a whole lot of smartphones and tablets are in breach of the patent. So apple have a bit of control, lets take some multi touch gestures for example, if new ones get developed that manipulate 3d content in web browsers for example, apple could restrict other manufacturers from enabling them thus meaning if you want to manipulate said content on a tablet it has to be an iPad.

That's just a vague example, the point is apple have some control over what other manufacturers can do from here on in that may adversely affect other devices

I'm waiting for the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 it is claimed to be far superior to the iPad2 but from what I read will only be available through vodafone

I'm also waiting for it, looks good, but I doubt it'll be far superior. Looks about the same, slightly bigger screen and slightly higher res, with Android 3.1 - which people have already tried, and it's different to iOS, but not neccesarily better.
but from what I read will only be available through vodafone
I don't think so. Vodaphone looked at having the 10.1v version, but you won't need a phone to use the Samsung Galaxy 10.1

Just reading up on it now, it's enough to make me take the iPad back and get an Android. As to what the patent really means, it seems even the experts are none the wiser.

Why would a patent being granted make you want to take a product the patent is for back?

and to quote one of the patenting experts (Muller) regarding this patent:

Muller said Apple doesn't play nice in the smartphone world, and "no other company seeks to drive competitors out of business the way Apple does."

It's not good for consumers, even if your favourite products are Apple, we still want competition.

lol, so you want a product based on ethics rather than the best product in the market, this is business not charity

:cuckoo:

apple won't drive competitors out of business if they do they risk creating a monopoly and having the patent revoked. They'll more likely just earn a good wedge of licensing features to the competition.

Er, no. The products are similar, there's no stand out leader. Given how close the products are, I'd also take into account the long term outlook for the industry, and I'd rather not support a company that would do anything to create a monopoly for itself. Much like when people don't like to support Micro$oft, as they're pretty similar.

Sure they would, they'd like nothing more than to have the entire market to themselves. If they were worried that could cause them to lose their patent, they'd simply allow a couple of competitors to piddle along behind them. I imagine it wouldn't be so easy for them to destroy the opposition, but I have no doubt they would if they could.

well I think you are about as wrong as can be, and you probably think the same, so let's bookmark this and then in 5 years come back and see who was right, we'll wage a penny on it

Not really. I don't agree with you, but I don't feel that strongly about it.

I'd raise you penny and put 300 on it (that's about the cost of a beer), but I don't see how we'll know who's right. I don't expect Apple will destroy the competition, because I don't expect the patent will allow them to. I expect they'll get whatever they can from it, and it will harm the competition and consumers, but I think it's unlikely there'll be an outcome where one of us can claim the winnings.
