Have you ever had to make use of an extended warranty?

Hi all,

just wondering how many of you have actually made use of an extended warranty if you purchased one.

Are they worth it?
How often does something go wrong with a lens?

I am very careful with my equipment so debating the worth of extended warranties.

If you have several high value goods, if you total up the cost of extended warranties on all your goods - you will tend to find its better to be "self insured" i.e. just pay out when something goes wrong.
 
IIRC a recent 'Which' report showed that extended warranties were an expensive waste of money - when you consider also the true implications of the Sale of Goods Act with regard to "of merchantable quality" it shouldn't really ever be necessary to have an extended warranty.
 
As a rule of thumb I never take out extended warranties. However, I did for my 7D. I bought it from John Lewis and thought it was reasonably good value for 3 years of cover including accidental. If anything ever happens to my camera I should be able to claim on that policy rather than my home insurance and risk my no claims discount.

I've never taken out an extended warranty on a lens, and havent had a problem yet (touch wood). I was curious as One Stop Digital have a Mack 7 year warranty for just £10 added to the price of a lens. There are some mixed reviews of Mack online though..
 
The only extended warranty I ever did was on my wifes phone. Now that DID pay for itself.
