55-200 for much faster focusing.

I still have both!
The focusing time seems less obvious on my D7000 body than on the D5100.
Given that the 55-300 does everything (and more) than the 55-200 it is in my camera bag all the time and I only ever use the 55-200 for portraits (less intimidating).

Try focusing on something about 6-7m away from you and then something at infinity.
That's where the issue is. Focussing at infinity in good light is fine, as with most lenses.
