Perhaps I need advise? present kit; G1, 14-45, 45-200, D5000, 18-70, Sig HSM APO 70-300. Rarely carry or use the two long lenses. Six months ago I had a 'moment', sold all my kit and rationalised to the above. Looking back the reasoning was; I have a bad knee and Hazel my partners health was failing, so we dont walk much anymore and when we do, weight is a problem.

I have been worrying . . . I am a worrier, let myself get depressed . . . I've been thinking that I have lost my mojo and enthusiasm for picture taking in the past year. Maybe its not so much lost enthusiasm, I still carry a camera every where, still look at everything with my togs eye, all be it not much of an eye, I even take a few pictures as the mood takes me . . . :-

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=274810

I have always treated pictures as 'WYSIWYG', so have a passion about getting camera menu setting right for JPG. Comes from my film days I suppose.

The G1 was bought for Hazel, she was not so keen, prefers her little, simple compact, so I had a go . . . I find the G1 does for me, everything the D5000 does, more conveniently, even better? . . . Perhaps my standards have dropped, looking down both barrels of 65 in 18 months . . . ?

So with semi retirement now in the frame . . . I have a DSLR that I almost never use, because I think it is duplicated by a camera that for me is more practical. However, the prospect of being without a DSLR after 20 years of 'camera pointing' seems like loosing an arm?

The dilemma, sell the D5000 . . . and go for a D90 . . . yeah, cos I like the way the (D5000) 90 works, the viewfinder and screen are much bigger, not an upgrade, just a rationalisation to take me into retirement so that I can go DSLR when I want to. Alternative; go for a D7000 . . . D90 with 'knobs on', an upgrade that I might never make full use of.

Either fulfills the DSLR desire, neither help with my dodgy knee, (G1 will do that) and both are heavy in comparison with the G1. The D90 is the cheap option, but the D7000 is new technology with some of the old stuff under pinning it:thinking: If I was to go D7000, my thinking is wait a while, the price of the D7000 will come down a little, current price is a bit strong?

These are thoughts, for views and consideration, nothing written in stone. One wonders how you might approach this dilemma. Incidentally, although I have my menus set for JPG, I shoot JPG/RAW, usually pp in 'simple ACR RAW' and finish of in Elements v.7., I suppose I'm not quite an old stick in the mud:lol:

Yes to buy or not to buy, that is the question.

If the D5000 fulfils the role you need it to, and you are happy with the images and the file size I cannot see any reason to buy a new camera at the moment.

If the G1 does what you need and it gives you pleasure then use it. A camera is just a tool. I have several Canon bodies and most of them ( except the 300D) come out on a fairly regular basis, depending on what I need to do. Only reason the 300D sits at home is my 20D is better for what I want.

Are you getting the winter blues, happens to a lot of people this time of year, short days and not so good weather. Maybe what you need is to look at doing some photography indoors with maybe a mini studio. Solves the walking problem and carrying a "heavy" camera.

Could it be you need a challenge? Something to get the grey matter working. Sometimes I get a bit fed up of the same old photography ( although it does pay the bills) so I keep a note book with project ideas to try. Sometimes making the mundane look interesting can be a real stretch at times and rewarding when ( and if) it comes off.

You could have hit the nail there John??

As far as the D5000 is concerned, its a great camera . . . but! . . . 'if I new then what I know now', ie., the G1 one does as good a job for me, I would have kept the D90 which I had, as a foil to the G1!!!! :bonk:

I've tried new gear to revive my missing mojo in the past. It doesn't work.

It may give short lived benefit but because the root cause is never really addressed I soon slipped back into photographic boredom. It took time but my desire simply returned slowly and in a different way.

"D5000, 18-70, Sig HSM APO 70-300"

perhaps that's the problem
I have a D5000, added a grip [thinking it would balance better - I have Dupuytren’s Contracture] then added a Sigma 17-70 f2.8
ended up with a LARGE LUMP of camera

out the other day with the D5000 body and a Nikon NIKKOR-H Auto 50mm f/2.
quite a difference

why not buy a 35mm 1.8 AF-s DX and "go light"

Yes Yardbent, its an option . . . however, I did not include in my list of lenses (forgot, that 'silver' shot gun:bonk:) I have a Nikon 50mm f1.8, use it with tubes for the od macro. It obviously comes into the loop with a D90-D7000? :naughty:

I favour the D90 . . . nice to have 'latest tech.,' and all that . . . but my view and style has always been 'keep it simple', this has applied to anything that I have ever done or do as a hobby, boats, fishing, model aircraft designing, building and racing. Any one got any views on the D7000, big launch, fanfares . . . now nothing? or is it to early? More mega pixels does not excite me, better ISO? dont take pictures in the dark, better focus; is that truly a better system or simply more point available, I only ever use the centre point, then recompose . . .

Well, been to the town to day, first time shopping for ages, I hate shopping . . . more like I dislike people and dont like parting with cash!

I took the opportunity to call into Jessops, have a look at the D7000 . . . its big, its heavy . . . by the standards I'm used to? I asked a couple of question . . . Jessops guy, all nicely dressed, suit tie, the new look shop very nice, but he did not have a clue, asked about the D90 . . . "old technology Sir" was the reply, and when I said, I was looking, not buying . . .

I will get the D5000 out over Christmas, taking a week off, see 'whats what'?
