HD camcorder vs DSLR - which is better

You can use camcorders for your home movies (which is what most people have given as examples of their dslr video...but that doesn't mean its all they are good for.. in creative hands, creative things can be done..

the stills were nice but I found the camcorder footage exactly what camcorder footage usually us - flat and uninspiring

You should film in a flat profile so you have lots of room in post.

The 7d has anything but flat/camcorder like footage.

Every single bit of gorgeous footage you've seen has been colour corrected etc etc in post. Maybe this one wasn't.

Just jump in and enjoy(y)

ps. 5D MKII (even with its foibles) is just awesome. Stunning, even.

If size isn't an issue you could look into getting a used Canon xl2, uses mini dv and is still great by todays standards (It even has an L lens on the front as standard lol). If size could be a problem then maybe look at the 5dmkII as it can produce great footage for its smaller size.
