What are the fundemneatla differences between the 7D and 300s's video capture.

Is it the equivelent of 7 mp and 12 mp? Or is the difference more complex.

When should you need 1024p over 720p and is the difference massive?

1080p has 1080pixels along the shorter side, 720 has the same aspect ratio, but only 720p... so a distinct loss of detail.

1080p is more 'futureproof' too... plus if you're shooting lots of video, the 7D has a lot of benefits over the D300s that make life slightly easier...and the 'jello' effect is minimised in the 7D too, but pretty bad in the D300s

1920 x 1080 = 2 x10^6
1280 x 720 = 0.9 x10^6

So you get approximately double the picture detail with 1080p.

Double the difference is pretty noticable, though you'll need a 1080p tv or computer monitor to watch it and file sizes are considerably larger requiring more space and longer processing times when you edit them.

1080P can be recorded at 24, 25(PAL) or 30(NTSC)fps on the 7D. 1080P usually (but not always) gives better results than 720P.

720P can record at 60fps on the 7D. Although lower resolution, the faster fps may provide sharper more accurate images when recording motion, sports or fast moving objects.

I personally select 1080P/30 when using video on my 7D.
