Does anyone here use a single RAW file and expose it 3 times -2 0 +2 in lightroom before merging in photomatix when creating HDR or am I the only one that uses this technique? ;-o

Jimmy_Lemon is the guy you want to speak to, he's a HDR Pro, hopefully he'll chime in.

I do that only when I'm really, really stuck at getting the curve adjustment to come out right, but it's a last resort because it usually looks awful, and will always be subject to further work (usually overlaying one of the original exposures and manually blending it in mysefl)

I have done if I decided that the shot would look good with HDR after the shot was taken otherwise I would just take 3 or more shots then merge.

I'd always much sooner shoot a genuine bracket I always think that looks better than faux HDR from a single raw the only time I'll do that is if it's a moving subject that is not going to be in the very same position between brackets

I also don't like Photomatix

Moving subjects is the only reason I started doing that but then I kinda do that automatically now without thinking of bracketing exposure, I used to use CS5 but I find Photomatix a bit simpler to use on HDR
What do u use instead of Photomatix? :-)

I dont do much HDR these days, but always preferred real bracketed raws, it just gives the most scope and least noise. I did do the occasional method of taking exposures from the 1 raw and saving them as tiffs and importing them into Photomatix (mainly for moving subject or where the bracket hadn't worked well) but then found you get VERY similar results just importing the single raw into Photomatix and let it do its stuff.

Pete Carr (an old member on here who still appears occasionally) did a good write up on the differences between 1 and 3 shots here - http://www.littletimemachine.com/hdr-guide/#onevsthree - tis a bit old now and Photomatix has evolved slightly but still pretty accurate.
