Help required please, I am sure you have seen this before but even so.

I have a D700 full frame camera and I want a zoom lens for it. Simple I hear you cry.

I have tried a Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR MK1, and although I loved it on my D300s on full frame it just aint the same and left me disappointed.

I have tried the Nikon 80-200 ED f2.8 and for the money was the best performer but 200mm on full frame was not close enough.

I have tried the Sigma 100-300 f4 and I did not find it sharp enough.

I have a budget of up to 1k and was thinking Sigma 120-300 f2.8 but I have read so many bad reports about focus issues that it has put me off splashing out so much for it.

Any thoughts what I could be looking at, I want it for wildlife, birds and the odd shot of static objects which are too far away.
I would like a lens I could hand hold if needed just now and again.

You won't get anything sharper than the 100-300 f/4 (unless the one you tried was a bad copy) and longer than the 70-200 for under 1k.
 
Didn't Nikon do 300mm f/4? Or maybe sigma 400mm f/5.6 which might be Ok with Nikon? Both should be cheap enough now to give it a go.

Now I wish that was so easy with Canon, as my spending priorities are clearly not in the longest range at the moment.

Liam, if you would like to try a Sigma 150-500 and/or a Nikon 70-300, drop me a PM and we can sort out a time and place to meet up so you can have a fondle. Might cost you a cup of coffee though! i'm free most of the time during the week - weekends are reserved for the wife though.
 
The Nikon 70-300VR sounds like it was built for your needs! Never heard of someone selling a 70-200 to get one mind!
