Its not just a sturdy tripod help I need.. I know nothing.. The two uses would be.

Tripod to hold a 1dmkIV and 400 2.8 lens.. only needs left/right movement

Tripod to hold a 1dmkIV and 70-200 2.8 lens but with lots of movement..


Both for video use... I have no idea what anyhting means when it comes to tripods.. so an idiot guide approach would be nice as all I ahve ever used is a monopod

budget? Its whatever it costs to do the job.. i dont want cheap and shakey.. i dont want gold plated.. i just want a work tool..

any help appreciated :)
 
I have a Manfrotto 058B Triaut Tripod in my collection which is very strong and heavy and it holds my Canon L 500mm f4 on a gimbal very nicely. Karl Taylor uses one and that is what prompted me.
 
What sort of height do you need Tony? (both min and max)

For -solid- I have a Velbon Delta with PH-157Q pan/tilt. It's not a lightweight, it doesn't have multi-angle legs. But it if it came to it I'd be confident putting a seat on top and using it as a chair. You could get something more expensive.. but this was £40 secondhand from a twitchers telescope shop on the coast.

I have no worries using this tripod for either a RB67 with 360mm, or for a small compact shooting video.

See if you can find a Cullmann Titan for sale, had one and paid about sixty quid for it on Ebay

Came with a 3 way head and was previously owned by Yorkshire TV, they had fitted it on a dolly, but I used it without on the legs

Sold it to a chap for use with a full format camera, superb bit of kit and sounds like just the job for you
 
sorry should have said.. will be for standing and I am about 5,11 didnt think either.. will alays be on reasonably flat ground
 
For video you will probably need some kind of fluid head rather than the ball head on most still tripods!

I have this Giottos one and it works OK. It's not the smoothest in the world but this is probably because I got sand into it but for fluid up/down and right/left it does the job fine.
 
You need a video tripod, have a look at some of the kits sold by Keene or creative video. Work out the weight of your kit and take it from there. Video heads will have adjustable drag and lock for panning and tilting so you can limit the movement of the head to suit your needs. Expect to spend at least £300 for decent Manfrotto kit, less if you go for Libec or a no name setup via ebay.

funny you should say that.. I had a figure of about 300 in my head :)

going to look into (that means google) all the makes mentioned later today ta.. its not an emergency.. its an add on i want to be able to offer.. I have two mkIVs and only use one at some jobs so I could set up a video to run static.. or offer to hire out to do matches.. and do action bites for newspaper websites.. local paper inbterested in bits of cricket hence the 400mm lots of options.. if anyone will pay :)
 
Something like THIS would be a good start. I'd try and find somewhere local to you where you can try some kit out before you buy.
