Went for a walk yesterday afternoon, took the D700 and decided to fit the Nikon 24-85mm lens I recently bought. Not sure this was a good idea, although

I had the camera in my Lowpro 160 bag and nothing else, by the time I arrived home I had kneck/shoulder ache.

I find the 24-85mm lens a very heavy lens.
 
I normally use a 50mm f1.4 on my Canon 5D but even that combo only gets taken out on special occasions now as a micro four thirds camera and lens combination is more compact and much lighter. The first time I went out with my G1 I actually had to keep checking the bag to believe it was still in there.
 
Good glass and big cameras weigh a lot!
I carry my d700, 16-35,70-200, 150 macro plus my lee filter case and often also my x100 all in the same bag, as well as my gitzo tripod in a separate bag. Carried it around for about 5 hours last week, plus I already have a knackered back anyway. (lower spinal fusion, pedical screw rod fixation, titanium cage and bone graft where the discs used to be!)

You want to try walking around all day with a 300mm f/2.8 and a teleconverter on it , the novelty soon wears off ;)
 
Hi On my day out I usually have 7d 17-55 f2.8, 100 f2.8L macro. 300 f4L. 1Ltr water,Vangard tripod And buttys. Normaly my walk is around 10 miles. Over 4/5 hours. I dont find it that hard. Even at 67

I don't have one of these but I did have a bit of a play with one in Calumet, seemed to be a fairly light weight lens similar build to a kit lens????:shrug:

It's only 150g more than the 18-55 kit lens...
 
Must be getting weak in my old age (79 yrs old) LOL
 
Perhaps a change of bag would help you Peter. A shoulder bag with a supplemmentary waist band helps reduce the weight on your neck and also stops much of the jarring when you walk.

You should have been carrying my D4 with the 24-70mm for me all of last week, in mid 30's temperatures around Italy.
Humidity 69% most days. I was soaking! :eek:

You'll get used to it. The trick, is to carry in in your hand.

Look at solutions such as the Blackrapid straps.

If there's anything else in the bag, spread the load by keeping the camera out as much as possible. This might also make a backpack work for you, which would probably allow you to more easily carry the weight.

Lowepro did replacement straps with extra padding -- think they used to be called 'Deluxe' straps, though not sure if they're still available. Could be worth seeing if anyone has stock -- think I saw one in a Jessops fairly recently.

When I was your age I played golf 3 times a week, 2 rounds a day and carried my golf clubs in a bag. 12years older makes a big difference.

a proper backpack is better balanced and much easier on your back.

Although if you consider the weight of a small shopping bag - e.g. a small free range chicken and vegetables for roasting - or a steel frying pan with the dinner it shouldn't be such a big 'problem'

Well today went out with the camera but changed the lens to the "nifty" fifety, this felt better, so I guess this will be the way to go at the mo.
