Edit My Images
Yes
hello, in need of some help here.

iv just been contacted by the local paper for the area who want to use one of my images in their paper about a friends band who i did a shoot for recently.

now i did the shoot for free since i needed models for O.C.F practice and everyone was happy and got what they want, they credited me with the pictures which helps me out.

the paper said if i was a professional then he would speak to his boss to see about a fee but they were hoping to just put a credit under the photo.

its a small piece, 200 words or so, what do i do???

Ask for either a fee, or for credit including Website address under the photo, so you might get some other local interest.

How big will the photo be?

Is the question about whether you should say you are a pro? If potentially they would pay for the images on their own merit, does it matter whether you are a considered pro or not?

Anyway if it turns out they wont pay then it might be worth letting them use the images anyway? Our local paper will not pay for photo's however I've had two pictures published and keep the papers as 'tear sheets' for my portfolio, which hopefully will help me win future work.

Let them have this one free, and see if they can get you into some other gigs for them to get some paid work and take some snaps of bands. may snowball to something.

im not sure, i only have my flickr cause i havnt got a website yet so its not reaally like they can say check out my site.

i was thinking a small fee would be helpful, they are not a big paper but still, they should be paying?!

i was thinking this, they are only down the road so may be of valuable experience if i can get some 'work' thrown my way.

Give them for free but for free advertising in return. So that could make it a permanent thing. That way you can get set up business photographing bands/gigs, you get noticed by people making more jobs for you, plus the papers get your images for free.

If you're wanting them to treat you as a pro in future and maybe get on good terms with them, then maybe it'll be more professional and a better precedent to charge for these photos? It likely won't be too much money, but the fact that you asked for money shows that you're serious about what you do... and while you're in conversation with them, ask about the possibility of assisting their photographer or some work experience or something, anything like that would likely be a good way of getting 'in' with them if they ever needed an extra photog...

that's what im doing.

i emailed them back and said i wasn't a pro but don't see why that should make any difference to any fees!

if they get back to me saying no then they can use the image, i'l try and build up some kind of opening for them for possible future work!

Make them pay - just like any other photographer. Remember that local papers can sell the images that they have printed- so they can potentially make quite a few sales off you, and what if the band becomes really big later on - the early photo then becomes very valuable.

Set a precedent , don't let them take you for a ride.

cheers for the info, still awaiting a reply although possibly finished for the day now.

Early newspaper shots of John Lennon?

Who owns the rights to them?

The guy who took them? I doubt it.

Couldnt agree more :plusone:

Given that the piece will be free publicity for the band, I doubt if the paper will pay anything. More likely they will tell the band that they will need to pay if they don't own the usage rights for their publicity photo to be used...

Try it by all means, but remember most local papers are based on a advertorial model with a smattering of news to suck you in. They might pay for news photos, but not advertorials...

As it's shots of your friends band, do the favour for your friends benefit.

Get them to buy you a drink and free tickets if they become successful.

It's not all about money.

I was approached by a local paper once who wanted to use some of my photos, but didn't wish to pay. I explained that as they were a profit making orgnaisation (in theory...), who would be using my photo in a publication they hoped to sell, then they would have to pay me for them. They made their excuses and left at that point.

I recently let our local paper use one of my images in return for my name & website address. We didn't discuss fees at all, I wanted the bit of free exposure so I decided it was a fair exchange.

I did ask (before i granted permission) that they keep me for any future work & they agreed. I know they probably wont contact me again on a freelance basis but if I get a shot of something newsworthy (living in Crewe, that could be a local lollipop lady retiring!) that could make the front page then I'd be more than happy to ask for a fee or refuse the usage
