Hi all,

I just ran across a Helios f3.8 70-150mm zoom lens going pretty cheap, just wondered if anyone knew much about these? There doesnt seem to be much about them on the net unlike the 55mm primes, which I do own and is certainly different! Im thinking it cant be too bad at all and at £10 its probably worth a go, I do have a Kiron f4 85-200mm though which I hardly ever use due to it being manual focus, im kind of intrigued by this Helios lens though who seem to have a good reputation, or at least the primes do.

Anyone owned one/seen anything about it? Think its worth it?

I appreciate the reply but im not a moron...I do own a Helios lens and am fully aware its a manual focus M42 mount - I have an adapter.
Also those links dont say anything about the specific lens im looking at, theres an infinite amount of websites which talk about the primes (I have one) but im yet to find any information on the zooms.

It was insinuated, I feel, through posting a Wikipedia page to Helios, as if I havent ever Googled the brand name before? :thinking: Not exactly help is it?
Ive done my research, there doesnt seem to be anything out there; no sample shots with it, nothing about whether its as good as the primes, etc. Hence why I thought id ask here in case someone owned one and could up a few pics.
 
There is no set format to follow when offering help and some find links helpful/interesting.

In view of your rather odd response to someone offering help I would be surprised if anyone else bothers the next time you ask. I know that I shan't be bothering with you.

I did say I appreciate his reply but the links didn't help me, is it wrong to the point that out? I don't think it was an odd reply at all, the links aren't relevant to zoom lenses, I own one of the prime which the 2 other links mainly refer to.
If that's the way you feel then fine, I do find it quite laughable though :wave:
 
It seems that your Helios f3.8 70-150mm zoom lens might not be what it says on the tin....... As you said, there seem to be little information on this zoom, lots of info on the Helios primes, but there seems to be little mention of the zooms.

But there is lots of mention of Tokina 70-150mm, or a Vivitar 70-150mm (Kino) or Quantaray 70-150mm lenses manufactured or re-branded around the same time.

According to several threads on the M42 forums, Helios zoom lenses were in fact made by an 'unknown' Japanese third tier lens company (maybe Kino) and are not the quality of the Helios lenses that is the Russian made primes.

I was going to reply to say you we're being a bit unfair but decided against it when I thought you might get angry at me too.

Is think the previous posts have proved my thinking right.

Even still, I read your coded message 4 times to see if I could break it and just saw you had written you had a Helios lens...hardly means you know the whole company inside out.

I own a Nikon 50mm, should other people assume I know everything about Nikon lenses based on that??

Thanks a lot, I did read they were made in Japan as opposed to Russia but I didnt know whether it was true or not. I must say I am tempted at £10, I could probably sell it on for more then that if I didnt like it but at the same time, it could be £10 towards a much better lens and when youre a student, which I am, every £10 counts :p
Some of the photos on that Flickr group do like quite good though, I quite like the colours but im assuming thats down to the old Zenit film camera and film as opposed to the lens, otherwise it doesnt look too special.
