Hello 1st Micro Four Thirds with 1/8000 shutter ? E-P5

If I could shoot RAW at ISO 100 and have 1/8000 sec I'd be very pleased but I'd almost certainly wait for a camera with built in VF as back screen shooting, especially with legacy lenses, isn't for me.

I had thought that I'd been a lazy voice in the wilderness over this issue and that I should just shut up and shoot at ISO 200 and f8 so I'm glad that I've been handed just a little hope that the Nex series isn't the only option for me.

I've got a brand new second hand 50mm f1.4 arriving soon :D and it'd be so nice to be able to shoot with it and my f0.95 wide open in daylight without having to faff on with ND's. I think I ran into 1/4000 sec 6 times the other day and the widest I shot was f2.8.

I've been having problems with the 25 1.4 and 45 1.8 wide open producing just a black screen and the 4000/1 flashing.

Sent it off to Olympus who have said it needs a replacement barrier?? Whatever that is
 
Looks nice. I'm quite enjoying my first foray into Olympus (long time Panasonic user). Weird menus but worth it for the IQ.

I might have to upgrade my EP2!
 
It's nice, but the GBP price is probably going to be near £1k for body only I reckon, that's way to steep if it is.
 
I cant see Olympus selling a PEN camera for anywhere near £1000. The E-M5 is cheaper than that. Why would you buy one when you can have all the OM-D loveliness for less :)

Well it's being listed as $999 on Amazon.com and we normally pay $ to £ so I'm just saying its likely, wait and see
 
Well WEX are listing body only at £899 pre order for end of June. It looks nice and ticks lots of boxes, but that price with no viewfinder is really OTT.
But when prices start to drop it does look interesting!
 
As far as I can tell, Olympus bodies seem to last much longer at their higher prices than Panasonic (at least on Amazon). Lets hope that's not the case for this one.

I just cant see it selling at that price not even to the 'must have the newest, crowd'. Mind you it does have WiFi, but is that really worth the extra?

Olympus have a bit more history regarding cameras than Panasonic , I think maybe to the layman Olympus are a proper camera company, bit like Nikon & Canon :) BTW Im not saying Olympus are better.

They do have a nice retro look so maybe that's a part of it. Personally I also like the look of the early Panasonics too.

I'm having trouble with the direction MFT and other CSC are going in. The move away from low sensitivities annoys me and I'm really struggling to accept cameras with base ISO's of 160 and even 200. Couple that to a max shutter speed of 1/4000 on many cameras and/or the inability to shoot RAW at ISO 100 and the list of cameras I'd be happy with dwindles. I can see myself giving up on the idea of buying a new body and using the cameras I've got and praying they don't die.

In the hope that someone at Panny, Olympus, Fuji and Sony read random forum posts...

Some people want to use wide apertures in daylight and that's best done with low sensitivities and higher shutter speeds and being able to shoot RAW at ISO 100 isn't too much to ask, is it?

Nice looking camera which id like too own alongside the OM-D but at that price ive no interest :thumbsdown:
 
Amazon.com have the E-P5 body only for $999 and the E-P3 with kit lens for $369 that's a huge divide. I purchased my E-P3 as third body last year, one of the best cameras I've owned.
 
After long consideration of micro 4/3 with Panasonic and Olympus modes vying for my attention, I finally decided on the E-P5. Why?

Brilliant handling in my hands. I stress 'my' because the feel of a camera and its fit in the hand depend on personal characteristics as much as the size, weight, feel and positioning of controls. I like the controls: their placement, readability, positive indents and ease of use.

The rear screen image and superimposed detail is brilliant. The VF4 viewfinder is a must for me in many situations as I have long sight. The diopter adjustment at max is necessary in my case for me to see find detail. I can manage OK with the back display, but it is too close to my eyes to see in focus without spectacles. Good enough for framing, and I can see OK manually focus assist - which is amazingly useful. But with the VF4 I can go a little further in accuracy terms.

You can view the specification online. Yes the 1/8000 is useful at times, but hey I am still in the early days of exploring the capabilities of this camera.

ive just ordered one couldn't resist it

anyone know if the 17mm kit lens is that much better than the 17mm f2.8 or Panasonic 20mm ?

ive got a Panny 20mm and the 17mm f2.8 on its way as part of the epm2 promotion

hoping one wideish prime my 60mm macro and 40-150 zoom will be enough to save me having 2 systems

had xe-1 with primes and om-d with zooms till last week
 
An example of 1/8000 using the E-P5 is in this shot of New Southgate station. I was on the 13:20 Kings Cross to York train, travelling at around 125mph. Using the Oly 45mm lens and shutter priority, the camera determined exposure at f/3.2. Pure luck that the station name appeared in the shot.

Note that the train was moving the camera from right to left across the station at very high speed. I could not read the station name as it passed. Note also that the camera was looking through the carriage window: not the cleanest of filters!
