firstly thanks for bothering to take the time to read this from a total beginner. i will try and keep it as short as possible.
i have always had a desire to take a good picture,but have never had the money to spend on a good camera set up.
through a bit of luck from my other hobby(motorcycles) i am off to the isle of man tt races for two weeks in may/june for a access all areas trip and want to make the most of it!! as a supprise my girlfriend bought me a nikkon D3100 for my birthday(i do love that girl!!)
it has a 15-35mm dx lens on it which does'nt give me much scope for distance work,i'm looking to buy a new lens something around the 85-300(i think) but im a bit lost in numbers and values described by them all..ie... do i need vr? do i need af-s?? does it have a built in motor or not??
i might sound like a total noddy but have been trying to learn a bit(bought a book..understanding exposure..which is great and helping me learn) but really am struggling with this lens malarky!!
i dont want to spend a fortune and also i am aware of the saying 'quality is remembered long after price is forgotten.'
any advice will be greatly listened to. thanks
 
For the D3100, you will need an AF-S lens if you want autofocus. VR isnt necesary but can be usefull at longer focal lengths.
I'd highly reccomend the Nikon 70-300 VR, a great quality lens with VR and a good zoom range. Wont break the bank either.

^^^ Can't go wrong with that lens really :thumbs:

Enjoy the TT. I've not been for ten years now but had some great hols there. Landscape is wonderful, and if the sun shines (which has been known) maybe pop a polarising filter on your other lens?
 
I was just on the point of trying to answer your post, but noticed somebody had got there first. I would confirm Dicky's comment and just add that the D3100 has no internal AF motor, hence the need for AF-s. Depending on budget, you might consider the Tamron equivalent which seems to get a reasonable write up. At 300mm, these lenses should give you a bit of scope at a m/c event!

just checked out a few prices....should have spent less on bikes!!!!!will check out the tamron noww...thanks

You can get the nikon second hand for below £300. You'd be crazy to pick the tamron over it.
 
i see that even used ones hold there price,so i see what your saying,but its breaking the bank 300 sheets!!!
times are hard down here now they closed the pits!!! lol.
might just have to bite the bullet and do it!!
