Help! 5D mk1 or 40D

I'm in a dilemma, should I sell my 40D with lens and get a 5D and lens (my brother has L lenses steal or keep my 40D and get a 10-22mm lens.... I have read lots and it's tied my head in knots.

The only thing I shoot that is sport is MTB and it's with flashes so uber fast frame rate doesn't matter, I really would like someone that has had or used both to give a real world comparison in image quality as that's what is important to me.

This depends on your budget and your need to go FF. Your 40D is a good tool and I'd suggest keeping that and investing in some good glass. IQ will not be improved with a 5D with poor glass bolted to the front.
 
17-40L, 70-200L IS and a EF 50 f1.4. My 40D has a non VC Tamron 17-50
 
I own a 5D Mark I and I've used a 40D a reasonable amount as I bought one off here for a friend and tested it out for him.

Both good cameras but I much prefer the 5D. It's a little heavier I think but just feels nicer in the hand, and there's just something about the full frame IQ - noise at high ISOs has a much preferable quality too imo.

Nice lenses are needed to make the most of it but it sounds like what you have would be good. The 17-40L is crazily wide on full frame, and I really like the extreme perspective. The 50mm 1.4 is really nice on full frame (I have a Sigma version and use it a lot). You will lose a fair bit of reach on the 70-200 though.

Thanks Graham, I love the wide perspective too and if I was to keep the 40D I'd get a 10-22 lens for it BUT for that money I could go full frame :)
 
Oh one thing to bear in mind - the 5D is a real dust magnet seemingly. Regular rocket blowing the sensor keeps it to a minimum but it's still annoying.

I don't remember the same problem with the 40D but I didn't ever change lenses with it.
 
Well I got me a 5D and EF24-105L as a walk around lens :)

I've a 50D (which is very similar to a 40D in IQ terms) and a 5D, the 5D slaughters the 50D for quality, it may not be as super sharp, have a s many MP for cropping or be able resolve as much detail but IQ is wonderful. I have given my 50D to my wife and I didnt bat an eyelid, ask me to do the same with my 5D and it would be a completely different matter. I wont even swop to a 5d Mk2.
I doubt you'll be disappointed.

The 40D has a dust removal system. It's not 100% effective, but it certainly helps.
