Help and advice needed

Well i took the plunge today and shelled out for a Sigma 150-500 os lens from a local dealer, we were in a while testing it out on a camera it was removed and boxed for me anyhow on getting home i read the leaflet then proceeded to attach to my D90,, now it felt a little stiff when attaching, more so than my Nikon one but thought i wasn't probably used to how big it was. When i come to put the OS on i noticed that the switch hadn't been put in the off postion now in the leaflet it says do not put on or take off the camera unless the switch is in the off position. Is it likely to have caused damage obviously it was left on at the shop any thoughts on this
 
I wouldnt be overly worried.....my zoom (not a Sigma, mind) goes on and off the camera all the time with VR switched on. Just make sure the power is off on the camera and you should be fine.....there shouldnt be any current going into the lens when the camera is off.

I guess it's like most thing when they say unplug before connecting,such as TV and AV stuff,I do most of the time but the odd time forget,I would think that you would soon know if it did any damage as it would blow up or something,if it did damage every time then it would be re-design very quickly,bet it happens(blows up) 1 in evey few million?
