If you had a budget of £1000 what camera and lens would you buy and why?

I am keen amateur who enjoys taking all photos but especially portraits of my kids.

Used Hassy 500. Blow the rest on Portra.
 
If all I wanted to do was portraits of my kids for a grand I'd have a 5D classic and a Sigma 50mm f1.4...

Take your pick between a Canon 500 or 550D, a 17-28mm F2.8 or 50mm F1.8 and budget flash or a Nikon D90 + 50mm F1.8 and budget flash.

Go for the camera that feels best in your hand and feels easiest to use, add a fast lens around 50mm (fast = smaller F number) and add a budget flash gun (Nissin Di 622)..
 
I have bought a preowned canon 40d and have about 600£ to spend on lens. Any suggestions?

maybe can stretch to get a S/H 24-70 f2.8L, no room for flash
 
Sigma 30mm f1.4. Or sigma 50mm (but I find that the 50mm is a bit too close).

Flash gun of some sort.

Perhaps a zoom as kids don't have a tendancy to stay still - but you'd prolly need f2.8 constant (if poss)



Pop back to a store and see whether they have both lenses plus canons equivalent, try them and see which one gives you the amount of view you want.

Then hunt for a decent priced one online or in the classified here (after one month and 100 posts)...
