Help - Canon 50D autofocus problem

My 50D seems to have an autofocus problem. If the focus is close then all is ok and the AF works, but if a long way off then the camera doesn't even attempt to focus I can manually focus and let the camera fine tune, but really need to get it fixed. Anyone else had a similar problem and a ballpark figure for a repair would be handy too.

Try it with another lens to try and isolate the problem. Local shop?

Thanks Richard. The damn thing does it with numerous lenses so it must be the body. Off to Canon I guess

the focus on mine seems to have dropped off, not as sharp as it was plus there is a bit of play on the lens which I also understand is a fault on the 17-85
thinking of sending it off for calibration
