Now call me an idiot, but software is installed, plug in, camera on, zoombrowser ex up, click aquire images, click images form EOS, EOS utility window comes up... but I cant click on any of the icons except the bottom one... I must be missing something really simple here??? but what? we use this computer to download from a Powershot A640 in zoombrowser ex also, could this be interfering??? help please for a DSLR virgin...

My pc does that when I upload my wifes pics from her camera canon A720, when I plug my Eos the in next time I dont open any program. I wait until it asks me which programme or view files just browse and find Eos Utility and tick always use this, should be ok , after that, until you plug the Powershot again then youll have to do the same thing again

The only icon I can open is monitor folder??? whatever the hell that does??? tried browsing in that but cant find anything, where are you browsing to find EOS?

Program files, do you not get a menu up when you plug you eos in, where it asks you what you want to do, and gives a list of programes

Get the eos utility menu up in zoombrowser but cant click on the icon to download

Dont open any program, plug in you camera and just wait until your pc asks and give the menu then you can browse to find Eos Utility from your program files

Computer doesnt ask me anything when pluged in and camera switched on, blue button does nothing

OK can you pen EU, if so go to Preferences at the bottom click it when the menu opens Basic settings, start up actions, Execute check it ticked

Looks like according to the manual, EOS utility should ask me for a model, however it doesny and camera lcd is blank

execute is ticked, if I un install will I loose pics??? sounds drastic!

Mine did this yesterday, wouldn't download no matter what I tried (450D). I'd just taken some pics in RAW which was not what I usually do. Unplugged camera, changed settings to jpg, took pic and hooked back up to pc - it worked!!

Have you ever been able to download from the 400D ?

nope, 1st pics I have taken with my new toy! will have to try re-loading software after weekend... thanks for everyones help

He could make a file on his desk top and then go to my computer and open his cam from there, then open the folder on his cam and drag them into his folder on his desk top.

if all else fails and you need pictures, take memory card out and dload direct from there.

Hi again, been a while, sorry back to this problem!!!! Have today uninstalled every last bit of Canon from my computer and re installed, surprise surprise it hasnt made a blind bit of difference. Still wont give me any highlighted icons to start download as before. Starting to tear my hair out! Have tried 2 different cables, still no luck. Tried a different port, still no luck. HELP please!

The quickest way to get your pics would be to get a Card Reader...... maybe a fiver from a computer shop..... sorted

Casn you not just go into your "My computer" and go into the icon for your 400D and either copy and paste or drag your images out?

Ha no problem happy to help.

Dont worry the DSLR is a different beast to a P&S you will get there. What seems to be the problem with them? Sharpness? Exposure? Everything? lol

Some good, some not very crisp, think I may have been a little close a couple of times! Just need to spend a bit of time playing with it, keep cutting tops of peoples heads of as well, doh! Will post a few tonight to get some comments, cheers

I have the same problem with my 500D, I sent it back to canon in July and they couldn't find the fault so I'm screwed. They sugest I try another USB cable. I have already tried 6 different ones in 2 different PC's removed and reinstalled all the software updated the software to the latest at the time.

I connect my 450D and it works fine just not on the 500D. both worked fine in the past.

I know the easy option is to use a card reader but I like the EOS utility for the remote control and editing the image profiles and renaming files when downloaded.
