Help choosing replacement Lens (Canon)

Long story short, my camera got stolen at the weekend :'( with circa 300 pictures of a wedding on it :'(

My amazing insurance company has already sorted it out and sourced a replacement for me and sent me the details for my approval!

On the camera at the time was a Tamron 18-250mm and the replacement they have offered is the Tamron 18-270mm. This hasn't got the most favorable reviews. The pictures I got from the 18-250mm weren't amazingly sharp but I found the reach of the lens amazing and very versatile and it was a nice walk around lens.

I still have my 18-55mm and my nifty 50. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a lens instead of the Tamron. It would need to be roughly the same sort of price aswell so no 'L' recommendations please :lol:

I've narrowed it to the

55-250 IS
70-300 IS
Tamron 18-270 IS (vc)

I'm thinking that the image quality will be better with the 2 Canon lenses but in 2 minds as to how much I would need the wideness of the 18mm when out and about. Should I compromise image quality for convenience? :bang:
 
Sigma 18-250 OS, I've seen some good reviews of it. The Tamron 70-300VC is maybe worth a look as well (I have one).
 
Do you want a "super zoom" likre the 18-250 (I own one) or do you want a tele zoom.
My sister has a Sigma 18-250 and is happy with it.

Of the two Canon lenses (and I do own both) go for the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens (I am not impressed with my Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens)
 
Thanks for the input. Decided to go for the Tamron in the end for the versatility. Camera gone on Saturday and a nice package arrived this morning! 20d replaced by a 60d. Thankyou NFU Insurance for an amazing job!

I've been thinking about insurance for a while but didn't know who to trust but that sounds like excellent service.

Have you got a link I can't seem to find camera specific insurance.

In Photo Plus Canon Edition #77, page 98 onwards there was a comparison test of 6 superzooms including the Tamron 18-270 PZD, the Tamron 18-200, the Canon EF-S 18-135 and EF-S 18-200 IS and the Sigma 18-200 OS and 18-250 OS. The Sigma 18-250 OS came out the best of the bunch overall, the Canon 18-135 next and the Tamron 18-270 PZD and Sigma 18-200 OS coming in equal third.

I've wanted an 18-270 PZD for a while but as I've got a 5D3 as my main camera and a 7D as backup I wont get any EF-S mount or equivalent mount lenses any more. From the reviews the Sigma 18-250 OS is getting though I'm starting to covet one of those instead.

It was under the personal possessions portion of my policy rather than specified items. The policy is on a new for old basis and I'd bought my kit second hand a while ago, paying £160 for the 20d body and getting it replaced with a 60d. I'm very grateful. Same happened with my bike that got stolen out of my shed last year. Paid £650 for it 5 years ago and it was replaced with a £1300 lovely bike. That wasnt specified either. Still can't see how this is viable but I'm not complaining. Going to be a lovely premium hike next year I guess.

From what I've read on the Internet the NFU are most competitive in rural areas.

Interesting. Thanks for that. Although it should be too late to change, the Tamron that arrived was DOA (not a good start). When it did take a picture it was throwing an Err 01 code and the lens was going crazy, opening and closing the aperture on its own and making very strange noises, so I may be able to change.
 
The Sigma 18-250 OS also did well in the Digital Camera mag review this month.
 
The Canon 55-250IS is a great lens to look at if you're on a budget, my daughter has one and loves it, gets very good results with it and for the price, def worth a look at.

The other lens I'd recommend looking at is the Canon 70-300IS, much better build and very nice results from it. I've one for sale in the classifieds if it's of interest...

Sounds like NFU have been excellent with you and is certainly good to hear
