My pc is a few years old now dual core 2.6 with 2g ram.When i connect my camera to download directly onto my pc then the internet cuts off. I have a wireless dongle plugged in through a USB port. Nothing else cuts off just the internet.Not sure if its a compatability issue or where there is a lack of power issue. Any ideas?
 
Which OS? Yes, it could be a power issue.

Is the pc a laptop or desktop and how many USB ports does it have?
A USB controller generally support 2 USB ports, if the ports are physically side by side then they will probably be using the same controller so depending on power requirements, it might be that the controller can't deliver enough power to both the dongle and the camera.

You can check the controller status under device manager (any exclamations or question marks show when you plug in both?)

You can also check that the USB ports aren't giving any I/O errors by using two low powered devices in the ports (e.g. keyboard & mouse).

An external powered hub can be bought for under a tenner these days so that's an option but first off all, check your device manager and see if there any issues there that show up.

Also ensure all your drivers are up to date, Windows Update has been ran etc.

If you have 2 usb ports on the laptop then use a powered hub for the camera and keep the usb dongle thing in the current one.

USB ports on the main unit shouldn't be swamped like that really. Points to poor quality laptop or the wireless dongle is a crap one. There was an issue with old usb adsl modems doing the same thing as they were specced badly.
 
I have a desktop pc. It has several usb ports in the back and 2 in the front.Im using 3 in the back and non in the front until i plug the camera in and then it goes belly up.When i unplug the camera it then finds the dongle again and connects to the internet. Im running XP Home.I tried putting the keyboard in the front and all is fine.

Have you tried plugging anything else into the front?

There is a tiny possibility that the USB connection cable is backwards. This would cause no issues until something was plugged in - they usually have keys to stop this but not always.

If everything else works in the front then the cable is fitted correctly.
 
You could try having a look in Event Viewer (start, run, type eventvwr) after you have plugged the camera in. There could be some messages in there that will help to diagnose.
 
Do other things still work right using the same cable?

I have one front usb port that has become worn and does not work with everything...but does with some things.
 
Maybe some sort of driver conflict when the Nikon driver gets loaded?

Check the bios is up to date, check USB hardware drivers are too and possibly the nikon and wireless dongle drivers also.
