Hi All,

I am new to this forum as found it while browsing through google for photography help.

I am a total newbie to photography so need some help please.

I went out the other day and bought an 8.1mp camera for £35 from local supermarket thinking this would do the job I wanted for product photography and I obvioulsy got it wrong.

what I would like to know is what is the cheapest and easiest way to get and keep a white background in product photography.

Also what compact digital camera would you all reccomend for a newbie just starting to venture out into photography as dont want to get some slr and not know what to do with it lol. just something easy to use and understand to start with.

Thanks all

Carl

Look at the Canon Ixus compacts and you won't go far wrong. I'm sure you'll get other recommendations. :)

Again, depending on the size of the product .... Marks & Spencers were doing laundry baskets for £5 - edit: now £6. they are white canvas, a pop up type thing and are excellent for backgrounds for (small) product shots.

Found a pic ...

It's a bit like this, but the white canvas is not see through like this one

Thanks for that Idea have seen the one on marks and spencers. what sort of light would I need on the outside of it as I have seen browsing the forums that people use some form of light on the outside.

would a lamp like this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4308980/Trail/searchtext>LAMP.htm with a 40w bulb be sufficient to get the outcome I need along with the Laundry basket (light tent) that you mentioned.

Thanks

Carl

Maybe I should add all my products are smallish mainly for household.

also whats the best background colour for white items as white on white doesnt look too good and this will be the main difficulty getting it right for my website.

Thanks

carl

The problem is not so much the camera, but you need to know a little about what you're doing and have a decent background and lighting set up.

The kind of thing you're looking at is fine. Blue background is popular.

Thanks for the reply hoppyuk.

I went out and bought a white pop up laundry basket as advised and also a tripod with 2 basic lamps as I mentioned above.

I shall take a basic photo of the set up later when I get it all done and will also show the outcome from my photos using it.

Thanks again

Carl
