Hi All

I have been trying to use my Nikon with my only lens the AF-S Nikkor 18-55m and have been unable to take any shots. The motor has been making very strange noises as it tries to focus and will not take a shot. I also struggled to turn the lens as if it was jammed :bang:

I therefore removed the lens today and OMG  the central circular section is clattering around inside the lens :runaway: I have not dropped, banged or knocked the camera so i am gobsmacked to how this has happened.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this part is? I know it is a case of taking it in for repair (just outside it's one year) or replacement but wondered if anyone had any ideas on TP in the meantime

Thanks for reading

repairing will cost more than the lens itself. if i was you i would use this oppurtunity to upgrade your kit lens to something better, even a 50mm f1.8 would be an upgrade that doesnt even cost much.

Agree'd with the above. A nifty fifty is a cracking lens if you are A) on a budget, and B) don't mind a prime lens.

Failing that, the 18-70 AF-S is an awesome lens. No VR, but pretty sharp.

If you are feeling incredibly flush, a 17-55 F/2.8 is probably the best DX lens available. :D

Thanks I will have a look into the costs etc but I think your right. Thanks for your reply

Thanks for the reply and the flickr add  I will check out your recommendations - oooh I can feel a spending spree coming on

This is exactly what happened to mine, I`d only had it for a few weeks, [ it was the kit lens ].
The shop [ Bennett`s ] refused to replace it, Nikon refused to replace it, Bennett`s have now had the original duff thing ever since [ the camera was bought last March ]. I am now in the process of taking Bennett`s to court for a replacement lens...
I hope you fare better with yours.

Oh my that's not good to hear :gag: I hope you get it sorted soon and your court action is successful. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? Thanks for the reply

remember, unless it's an AFS, it won't autofocus on your d40, I got a nifty fifty, but need to manual focus with it

I doubt it will be any help to you but if you would like a copy of all the to and fro with Nikon I would be happy to send it you [ will copy/paste ] then at least when you get told it`s not something that happens to this lens you can show them otherwise at least

I had problems with my 18-55vr lens last November whilst
on holiday and posted on here about it, I spent the next 2 weeks using my 55-200 lens only, the day before we left
I stuck it back on and it worked fine and has done ever
since, The only thing I can put it down to was that it may
have got damp as I had been taking pictures just before it
went wrong of a storm. the symptoms sound very similar to
yours horrible grunchy noise when it tried to auto focus, and
unable to shoot the picture. I was convinced it was a goner

Thanks for your reply and link to your thread  I think your right I think it is the same problem and now you come to mention it the last i used mine was out in the snow!

I think mine is broken though as a part of the inside is rattling around loose inside the lens but I think the start of was because of the weather cond as you say.

Glad you got yours sorted and thanks again

A friend of mine had a badly damaged lens and she took it to the Real Camera Company in MCR (Picadilly Gdns) and they fixed it for £10, her previous quote was £100. Maybe worth a try as you're not a million miles away

Mel, I have an 18-70 afs that justs sits in my wedding emergency kit and generally feels quite left out. You would make its day if you wanted to borrow it whilst you sort this if you want. Your are only up the road so I'm sure we can arrange to meet quite quickly if you want to.

PM or ring me if you want to borrow it - number is clearly on my website if you don't still have it from the Learn Together Meet.

Simon

Thanks for that link. Looks "The Proper Job"...I will give it a look next time I'm over!...Son lives in Manchester:thumbs:

Don't go for the 50mm f/1.8, manual focus only, and a weird 75mm equivalent focal lenghth.

The 35mm f/1.8 is infinitely more useful, it literally never comes off my D40.

Best of luck fixing the 18-55 though, that is also a good lens for when in daylight.

Hope you get sorted Mel but if you don't I have a mint 18-70mm for sale in the classifieds at the moment.

Andy

Sounds like you may have broken it internally or at least bent some bits, I have the same issue and Nikon won't sell me the parts to fix it, and Nikons estimate to repair just isn't worth it...

Sell it on ebay, you should get around £20 and put that to the price of a new lens.

just a bookmark - to see how this transpires - cos my 18-55 is suspect ATM

good luck !!

False alarm over my 18-55mm - just a bit of latitude in the barrel "float" - told to expect it in a kit lens.....:shake:

I recently got from here a mint 35mm f1.8 - excellent - would recommend you get one sometime ?................

Great news and thanks for the lens recommendation

any progress on the repair idea?

BTW --- "waspjunior" put me onto "Camera World"
the London branch emailed me by return to say they had 18-55 AF-S *VR* in stock at £99 +pp and offered to put one aside - ..

at that price - why not just get a new lens with its warranty....

Unless you land one that doesn't want to manual focus! aaargh. In the process of getting it fixed though :)

Nikon seem to be trying to delay things by witholding the info of whom and where I have to send the court docs, so I`ll give them another couple of days and will just send them addressed to `The MD`, when that cut off date is reached I`ll send you the copies of all the correspondence about my lens, [ including their refusals to give me other contact info as though that would stop me going to court  ], hopefully it will be useful to you with yours ;)

Hi John thanks for your post

I have an update - it is dead and would cost over £100 to repair :gag:

I have therefore decided to get myself another lens and possibly upgrade spec. Thanks for your help I will be checking your recommendation out - thanks :-)

Oooh yes we don't want one of those

Hope you get a good result and thanks for your help it has been appreciated. I'm going to sell my lens on ebay for spares as there seem to be a few that do that and the money I can use towards another lens. Keep me posted on how you get on and good luck :D

Hi all

Just a quick update :D

i have now go my nikon back to normal as I purchased a Sigma 18-50 lens for £40

It's not brilliant and is very noisy but will do the job while i save for the 55-200 or the 18-300 Nikon lens.

Thanks again for all your help and support (especially with the comments on my P&S photo's) it has been appreciated :notworthy:

Here's to some serious photo taking now
