A 70-200 is shorter than a 70-300! The IQ is better, but it will not give you more reach without a TC.

Hmm, Nick Guest? wind up maybe?

Well Im not a pro, only have a few lenses and I know nothing about long range lenses. I'm sure someone with a better idea will be on hand to help you out shortly :)

come on folks, be nice to the new folk.

Hi Nick. Welcome.
I think the problem is your question is not too clear.
You say you have a 70-300, and you want to get closer, in which case you will need a longer lens, i.e. MORE than 300mm.(400, 500, or 600mm for example)
A 70-200mm lens will not get you as close as your current lens, although the 70-200 is going to be better image quality than the 70-300.
Hope this helps.

First up the bigger the number of mm the longer the lens so a 300 is longer than a 200.

However a 70-200 has a wider maximum apperture (f2.8 as opposed to the f5.6 of the 70-300) , this means that you can fit a 2x teleconverter and make it effectively a 140-400 f5.6

However although the 70-200 is a cracking lens its expensive and thats not the route i would suggest if you only want a long lens.

PersonallY i'd say just buy a longer lens , depending on how much cash you want to spend there are multiple options but the likeliest options are

if you want a zoom:

sigma 150-500 OS
Sigma 50-500 OS
Canon 100-400 IS

alternately if you want to spend less you could look for a non stabilised lens like a sigma 170-500 or 135-400 second hand

or if you want a prime (that is a lens with a fixed focal length)

I'd suggest a Canon 400mm

I'd be careful about buying sigma 400mms second hand as a lot of the older ones don't work with DSLRs , and id suggest staying away from mirror lenses which although very cheap are foixed apperture and limiting.

In terms of where to look , as you can't yet get in the classifieds here I'd suggest if you want new you look at kerso's site flashcamera.co.uk , at panamoz, at Digital rev, or Hdew , while if you want second hand I'd recomend MPB, Mifsuds, camtech, or ffordes

Ok thanks all , but now I ask this,IHave a thousand pounds I would like two lenses close/far but I do like macro pics so".........can any o e help me out with this problem please ? Answers on a post card lol Jk

Nick,

It would really help people out if you could be a bit more specific about what you want. Wanting two lenses "close/far" and liking macro is all a little vague TBH.

Am I right in saying that you have a 1100D and a 70-300mm but no other lenses?

Your existing 70-300 already gives you quite a bit of range, so where are you finding that it's limiting you? - or is it the image quality that's more of an issue?
You said you wanted a lens that gets you close up - do you mean macro, or do you mean the ability to photograph things a distance away from you?
What type of photography are you interested in? Wildlife, landscapes, people, architectural (we already know that you have an interest in macro)?

If you can give a bit more information, you'll find that people will be better placed to give you advice :)

OK if you have a £1,000 to spend you may struggle to get 2 lenses ,a longer lens than you 70-300 and a macro for that budget, without opting for second hand

You could opt for a tele converter for your existing lens , however whilst these do effectively increase the focal length of your lens they do reduce the maximum aperture and can result in autofocuses not working.

For macro you could look at extension tubes being used with your existing lens. an relatively inexpensive option.

Personally I'd go for a second hand lens. MPB do have some Sigma 150-500 lenses available for around £600. Do some research on this lens and see if it what you are looking for. Anything longer than 500mm is going to cost an arm and a leg .

If you want to look at macro lenses, try the Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro or the Signa 150mm. Both are good lenses for macro and conventional photography

Hope this helps

With a thousand pounds to spend I'd be looking at a Sigma 150-500 OS and a Canon 100 2.8 macro non L, both of which will give you excellent photos for the price.

That's super guys thanks for your input, I guess I'll just stay as I am right now and go buy a lotto ticket lol
