I have fancied getting into photography for a few years and finally decided to take the plunge. I am gonna do an on-line course which it says will train me to eventually work as a professional photographer.

So, here's where I need your help. What camera do I buy to start me off? I was hoping I could pick up my first digital SLR for around £300-£400. It would seem Canon or Nikon is the way forward. Am I being realistic hoping to get one for this price or will I be needing to spend more. There is also the question of lenses. I know I will need different ones for different shoots but is there a good 'all-rounder' to get me started?

Thank you in advance. Hope you can be of assistance.

Hi and Welcome

Best thing would be to go to a local shop and see what feels comftable, also maybe look at second hand.

Lenses will depend on the type of photography.

First off, Welcome!

I bought an Olympus E-420 for around that price brakcet, and it's a lovely little camera, little being the word! As for the online course, I'll leave that to other members to comment on lol.

hi and welcome  what online course are you taking? they usually take your money and run so be VERY carefull

You should be able to get a Canon EOS 450D for under 400 quid if you shop around or buy a good quality used one. The question of lenses really depends what you're going to be shooting. For example, if you want to start shooting motorsport, there's no point in suggesting the 50mm f1.8 lens as a starter, as it would be useless for that.

I'm doing an online course, never known someone do this - mine have been wonderful :)

I am still to decide on which on-line course to take. I have been looking at The Institute of Professional Photography but as you speak so highly of yours I would be grateful if you could recommend them to me please.

What the web site address please for the online course

Hi and welcome.

I'm sure many more people will tell you this as well but my advice would be go to a camera shop and try out as many cameras as you can. They are all slightly different ergonomically and some may not suit you. Don't get to fixated on brands, they're all pretty good now. Nikon and canon have possibly a better lens selection but the others are catching up and are usually considerably cheaper.
A good camera body is important but without good lenses you will be disappointed so don't splash all your cash on a body.

Good luck with your search and your course (I'm doing the NCFE Level 1 at college) and enjoy snapping.

Andy
