Hi all

Got an email through flickr below wanting to use my photo in a press release.
Not making the same mistake again and giving a photo away so how would you guys go about gently suggesting that my images are not free and how much should I bargain for ?

Hello,

I am interested in pictures for a press report of our
products. We delivered some

cladding products.
Have a look on the website www.*** there you can see
what we do.

Please tell me if it ist allowed to announce your pictures
in our press release.

Certainly we will print your name on the reference.

Waiting for your reply

Any help would be appreciated. I know there was thread on here the other week about a food photo that was wanted by a Greek magazine and I cant remember who it was but I remember they settled on 180 euros ;)

Thanks toothie. Just found the thread "A sale ... just"

Just sent them an email along the same lines of Dark Star asking which images, how they are going to used, what format - print, web etc.

Asked how much they are willing to pay for the photo/s and if it affects the copyright of the photo/s.

Probably never hear from them again ! lol. They just want to give me a credit in a press release for a german company that I would never see !!!!

I don't think so !!!! Will let you know if I get a reply.

Unless you've got an idea of a price it might be best to draft a response that invites them to propose a price - then you've got the option to counter-propose a higher value and settle somewhere in the middle.

Thanks. Sent them a reply basically asking how much they are prepared to pay for the use of the photo/s. That will probably scare them off as they only want to give me a credit ! lol

Ask them to send you details of how they want to use the [pic (size, how long for, etc), and you will send them a quote. That way they will know you're serious.

They're using your pic to make money so there's no reason why you shouldn't get paid too.

Have a look at the Alamy site to give you some idea of the various options/uses they offer potential clients, and the prices they charge. You might wish to go cheaper than them - its up to you.

Well done and good luck!

I got the mail shot from Schmap a while ago. I replied asking for a good reason why they couldn't afford to pay for it and if they had one they could have it free - I got no reply.

Hope you have better luck getting a reply than i did

Just got a reply:

Hello Anthony,

many thanks for the short term answer.

We are a small family company in germany near cologne.

If you will have a look an our website from time to time you will find pictures form you.
We are thinking to take pictures in our different sales and promotional literature if you don't object.
On our website we are planning to place the Liverpool Museum to our reference list.

If you have some more pictures of the façade attachment from that building it would be nice if you would inform me after you upoladed them.

We are very sorry that we are not able to pay for the use of the pictures but we engage with you to print your Name and City on all our publications. If you want to, we can also print your website or e-mail address.

If you have further questions don't hesitate to contact me

Greetings from Germany

Petra

So the answer to payment is no :( but they will print my name and city on ALL our publications. So when my bills are due I will tell them that I will print their name and company etc on the back of my prints :bonk:

So what would your reply to this be ?

It should be along the lines of 'My minimum charge for use of my photos is 100 euros per photo, rising based upon size, application and distribution'. In view of this, I'm unable to accept you kind offer to use the photos for free. If you wish to reconsider at any time, please do not hesitate to contact me...'

When I first started I got the email from Schmap and I admit I did think it was exciting at first - someone actually rating my photos and wanting to use them on a website that mapped the city in which I lived - no payment but a credit and a link back to my flickr page. Stupidly I jumped at it.

After reading this forum and seeing that companies see Flickr as a free Getty Images/Almany etc. I told myself never again would I give away my work. The Schmap link hasn't made any difference to my flickr views as far as I can see.

Mind you it was nice to see my name in print as it were lol :bonk: but as you all say a credit doesn't pay the bills !

Apologies to Dark Star for looking over his thread 'A sale ... just' and trying to use his approach dealing with this company. I have just sent a reply to them and fingers crossed they will suddenly remember they have an advertising budget - considering they have done building facades in America, Russia, Italy, UK, Germany etc etc etc. lol.

Hello Petra

I have looked at your website and I am very impressed by the website itself and by the worldwide work that your company has done.

I am delighted that you have shown an interest in my photo and the others photos I have of the various stages of the Liverpool museum construction and I would be happy for you to use them if we could only agree a suitable fee.

I feel that if my images are going to be used on your website and in sales, advertising and promotional literature, for which companies usually have a budget allowance, then there should be at least some renumeration for me.

I hope that we can reach an agreement.

Many Thanks
Anthony Bradshaw

Bylines/credits don't pay the bills. I can't go to my bank and say I've got no money, but 25 bylines to pay in.
Stick with it and get some money, even if it's just a token gesture. After all, they want to use your image to generate income.

I think thats just a language issue, I doubt they are using them currently rather they would like to use them on their website in the future.

No its okay they aren't. That was the first thing I checked.

Got a reply from them today:

Re: Liverpool Museum

Hello Anthony,

many thanks for your comments.

Sorry, but we settled for some other pictured.

If we have further need, it is possible that we conntact you again.

Best regards

LMAO  In other words they found someone to give them a photo for free on Flickr. At least the photographer gets a credit ! :bonk:

Should have taken something rather than nothing... maybe have asked for 20 euros and a credit.... but yes, people will bite on a published credit, even if its for a press release by a Hungarian company making toilet brushes for the Uzbek market :D

Just reply and say you're sorry they had to settle for their second choice and that you look forward to doing business with them in the future when they realise that you da man! :D

I would have to diasgree with having already given one image away. I don't feel that the credit does any good at all. Schmap used my image for an online map for Liverpool and, as far as I can see, it has not increased my flickr views or resulted in any enquiries so apart from seeing a photo with my name underneath there has been little point.

As far as I am concerned if a company wants to use my image for promotional, advertising etc, material for which the company will have a budjet to produce then why should I not be paid ?

I am sure the web hosts get paid. The web designer gets paid. The newspaper gets paid. The printer gets paid. Yet when it comes to the images they want to use they think the photographer shouldn't get paid ! :bonk:

As for a published credit ..... a national newspaper then maybe ... but a foreign promotional leaflet ? thanks, but no thanks.

Maybe it didn't come across right, but I was trying to suggest you should have put in a much lower figure than 100 euros to get something rather than nothing.

The other point was that there will always be someone who will give it away.

I actually didn't suggest an amount at any time. I asked them what the intended use was and when it was promotional / advertising I asked them how much they were willing to pay for the usage rights.

Obviously they didn't have any intention of paying a bean and moved on to the next sucker who is fully prepared to give his work away for free.

There will always be someone who will give their stuff away for free .... but it ain't gonna be me ! Had they offered some money, a copy of the leaflet / brochure and a credit then I would have let them use the image.
