Help me choose a Canon lens ti replace my kit one...

I have a 550D and I got the 18-55 kit one, I want to sell it and get a better lens in roughly the same range, is the 17-85 mm Canon one any good or is there better choices, not wanting to spend L money mind....
Any pointers please would be much appreciated....

I had a Canon 17-85mm. The IS, USM and zoom range are great and the only optical downside that I found to be significant was the distortion at the 17mm end which was only just possible to correct with my correction software doing its very best and working very hard. I'm sure that I read a review that said that this lens distorted more than any similar lens they'd ever tested. Apart from that mine was ok.

However, I replaced mine with a Tamron 17-50mm (non IS) which I personally think is a much better lens although it lacks IS and USM and doesn't have the same zoom range. It does however have f2.8 available throughout it's zoom range and it's quite a compact lens.

There's a very similar Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and both the Tamron and the Sigma are now available with IS, the Sigma has HSM too. There's also the Canon 17-55mm IS USM which some say has the best image quality, but it's also bigger and more money.

PS. I'm sure you get a hood with the Tamron and Sigma lenses, with the Canon you have to buy one.
 
The 3 lenses most often recommended in order of increasing cost are:

Tamron 17-50 2.8 non VC
Canon 15-85 IS
Canon 17-55 IS
 
I have used a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 (non VC) initially on my 450D, (to replace the kit lens), and latterly, on my new 50D. I've had it for just over 2 years and have been delighted with the results produced. It's my walkabout lens and is very rarely off the camera. The absence of IS doesn't bother me.
 
I have the Tamron with VC. Some say it is not as good as the non VC. What does everyone think.
 
Looking at the 10-22 wide angle, then the 15-85 mm f3.5 as well as the 17-55 mm, far too many choices for me to make
