Help me choose a new lens (and a little help!)

I am looking at a new purchase in the very near future to hopefully complement my new D800

I have a Nikon 50mm 1.4, Nikon 80-400VR

I also have in my bag a Sigma 17-35 and a Sigma 24-70 2.8

Whilst I do like the Siggy lenses, i think they will be shown up a little by the D800 and in all honesty, the Siggys get less and less use. (as the 24-70 Vignettes at 24mm i done use it at that range!)

So I am tempted to trade them in for something.

Now I like the Nikon 85mm 1.4 or the 105mm.

can someone tell me which 85mm would be the better lens? or would the 105 be better?

backround of my photography: mostly personal stuff, but getting into some portraiture for friends/family/pets at the moment.

Many thanks in advance

85mm 1.8g gets great reviews

re the 105, there are a few - which ones were you looking at - macro or dc?

Wouldnt really be a lot in it. Also overall sharpness, focus speed and corner quality are not that important on a portrait lens, so the older 85's would be fine.

But - i dont do much portraiture...:exit:

Thanks very much Phil!

I am not too far from the gold mine that is Mifsuds (Brixham) and they have 2 85mm 1.4 AFD
one for 579 and one for 679.. looking at the site, they look the same lens, but one is excellent++ and the other is mint and boxed.

I think a trip down might be in order with my body and have a play with them!!!

Unless anyone else can chip in something?? :D

85 is better for portraits and the 105 is for macro works.
