I am in the market for an UWA for my Nikon D7000!

I have been looking at the following:-

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens £600

Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM Nikon Fit Lens £330

Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon £430

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 AT-X PRO DX AF £430

It will only be used for Landscapes!

My question is from peoples experiences with the above lenses which is the best to go for?

the last one...i had one, and sold it as i wanted sigma 10-20mm. i regretted it greatly. tho the sigma is quite cool the extra 1mm seems to add some interesting effects.

but the last one definitely.

edit: reason for not picking the Nikkor because it is not the best in the Nikkor offerings. but then again the best costs £££££. you may want to consider the 12-24 Tokina f4 as well. that is also a gem of a lens which i also had the pleasure of owning and using.

The Nikon first then the Tokina 11-16. If you are considering the Nikon as an option then save/get the Nikon. The Tokina would be an ideal second choice. I'd exclude the Sigmas personally.

I have the Nikon fit Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM and love it but only at the wide end as it seem to really distort the image beyond being usefull after about 14mm.

Nikkor 12-24mm f4.0 or is that too much £££.

Riz :)

to be fair, if you balance value performance and quality then

tokina
Nikkor
sigma

would be the order as the tokina is 2/3 of the price and does as good job as the nikkor if not better with regard to really good sharpness when stepped down to f4

i wouldn't have picked the 10-24 nikkor as i would have gone with the 12-24 f4 if i am going for a nikkor and on a budget. otherwise money no issue would go for the 14-24 f2.8. but that might not be wide enough for u on DX.

Is the extra £200 worth it!

Mmmm it does have great build and that lovely gold ring around the front :D

Riz :)

The extra 2mm on the wide end is a lot at this focal length. I was looking for a wide angle a few months ago. Settled on the 10 24 - main reason was the wider range than other wide angle zooms, 10-24 on a crop almost gets into 'standard' territory. The review from photozone cemented my choice:-

Compared to its older sister lens (which is even more expensive) the 10-24 offers a wider zoom range, similar build quality and almost the same level of performance in the overlapping range. Given these results, it's difficult to find arguments not to choose the new lens over the 12-24 DX (which surprisingly is still offered).

Thanks for that!

I was thinking the Nikon and no one so far has convinced me otherwise!:D

I've just gone from the sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 to the nikon 12-24 f4.

Edit it looks like you have already made your choice, the 10-24 does get good reviews, enjoy your new lens.

I so badly want a tokina 11-16!
Just can't quite justify it yet.

One day...

Resisted ordering last night, need to way it up not after several large glasses of red wine!:naughty:

I am torn between the Tokina and the Nikon!

Not many shops have the Tokina in Nikon Fit!:shake:

The tokina seems to win in iq in reviews, but wondering about resale value etc I suspect the Nikon would be a better bet.

Are you ever likely to go FF? Then the 14-24....

I also was looking at the tokina, ceratinly gets good reviews, just thought the wider range on the 10 24 would be handy.

There's little difference in IQ between the Nikon and Tokina. I opted for the Tokina and saved some cash. Can't say I've missed the extra 1mm at the widest end (hard to miss something you've never had). The wider max aperture on the Tokina is akin to novelty value - but you never know.

Currently selling a tokina on eBay. Love the lens but upgrading to a FF and its a crop lens. Has the tendency to attract light flares but its very sharp

The tokina and the nikkor will hold values equally well. The 11-16mm is a very popular lens. Whenever it comes up on classified it gets snapped up pretty quickly. So wouldn't worry about that.

As you are going for all DX lens which is why I suggested the 12-24mm f4 as its a FX should you ever want to go down that route.

IF full frame is on the cads in the next few years, I would go for a FF compatible lens, with the 2 contenders being Sigma's 12-24 and Nikon's 14-24. Not used the Nikon but have owned and used the Sigma for several years on film (35mm), Dx and now Fx bodies. It's incredibly wide on FF and my copy is as sharp as you like, although others have reported softness in their copies. The extra 2mm is a fair amount at these extremely short lengths and the Nikon is (at f/2.8) faster - possibly not as important for landscapes as for other applications.

I'm selling my sigma 10-20 at the moment cos of moving to full frame.
I will miss is massively and it will be sad posting it. :)
I have extensively used the sigma 10-20 and the Tokina 11-16 and they are both amazingly great lenses.
One might have this percentage in a chart on the net somewhere, on that somewhere else.
I found getting the tripod and focus point, framing an UWA a million times more noticeable in the shots than which lens I used.
I'd love to meet someone that could ever tell the difference, unless you are printing large prints all day long.
We want the best kit all the time,
The sigma on a d300 and a Tokina on a d7000 are out of this world quality wise, the 14-24 on a d800 is just slightly more out of this world. :)

Weighing everything up I would go for the 11-16. In fact I might get one too. Only £355 at hdew its a bargain!

Thanks for all the replies people, much appreciated!

FF in the future is possible:thinking:I would love a D800:love:but the wife is dragging me out to look for a new kitchen today so the D800 may have to wait!:bang:

I think i want wide DX so i get the benifits straight away as 14mm is only 3mm wider than i have at the moment, would that be wide enough on DX:thinking:!

If i do ever go FF i will keep my DX gear anyway!

I've the Sigma 10-20 on my Canon and really like it. At the time I bought it i couldn't justify the extra for the Canon UWA and have no regrets to it.

If you have a look at the Flickr below, I took these for my mate who's a joiner / kitchen fitter with it for him ...

I used to use the 12-24 Nikkor when I shot DX format.

Fabulous lens.

When i shot DX there was really only one choice based on price and quality and that was the first version of the Tokina 11-16mm, superb.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I take it the Tokina will accept square filters OK?

I may get the Tokina and use the money saved to get some nice 100mm ND Grads to go with it!:)

Hi SImon, you may wan to check what size filter you need for something as wide as an 11mm. You might need 150mm filters to allow some freedom of movement of the grad - perhaps someone can advise for sure?

I'd air on the side of caution with filters. I think it's a 77mm filter ring so 100mm filter will probably be in the shot.

It is indeed 77mm but I used mine with a Lee wide angle adaptor and 100mm filters. You can get away with one filter certainly. Any more than that might cause vignetting but only at the widest focal length and probably correctable. I'm pretty sure I have one or two shots around 12mm with a big stopper and grad in place. Never used a polarised on the front but for wide angles, I tended to avoid a CPL anyway.

For what it's worth the 11-16 is one of my all time favourite lenses. I'd have another in a heart beat if I could afford it!

The Nikon 12-24 is a DX lens. There is a full frame sigma 12-24, it's insanely wide!

Yup - and I'm insane! It's one of my most used lenses. There is a downside to it for filter users - not easy to use grads or pols on it. Other filters are available as gels which can be cut (using the template provided) to slot in behind the rear element. Grads and pols can be bodged onto the fixed hood using blutak or similar but it's not ideal. Dx users of the lens can also use traditional screw in (or square system) filters by removing the traditional type lens cap that fits into the bucket type cap that pushes over the fixed hood. However, in Dx mode on a D700 (and presumably on a Dx body), at 16mm with a polariser, you'll get visible vignetting. You'll also get very uneven looking skies due to the width of the AoV.

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated.
Has anyone got any advice on square filters at 10/11mm on a DX body?
Really want UWA for landscapes but if it's problematic to use filters might just stick with the 17mm I've got!

See my post above. You'll be fine if you don't go crazy stacking them.
