I was wanting to get a dedent lens for home studio work and had kind of decided on the 24 - 105L. However, as I'm working in a tiny space (too small in all honesty) where I've only got 3.2 metres from myself to the back drop, and the subject somewhere in between, I'm rarely past 50mm. Its not unusual for me to shoot at 28mm as I'm on a crop sensor.

So I'm wondering if there is a better choise in a similar (or ideally lower) price point. I do want a lens thats as sharp as can be though.

Any suggestions?

Your studio is smaller them mine and depending on what your shooting I use a 24-70L and it works fine, I am pondering getting the 24-105 as f4 is fine for studio i rarely go below f8.

You should be fine with 24-105 but if your on a crop maybe think about 17-50 Tamron & an 85mm prime.

24-70L would be ideal then with FF.

I shoot the same distance, well slightly smaller actually and manage with a 17-50 F2.8, 50 & 85 F1.8's.

The 50mm is about right for what I shoot most of the time and that comes out as approx 80mm for the same field of view on a FF.
28mm is my next most used focal length. Both would be pretty much covered by the 24-70L on FF

I prefer to keep the aperture below F4 where possible so as to blur the background.

On a cost conscious level.....

- a couple of lenses to consider is either the Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro or

- one of Sigma's best kept secrets, the 24-60mm F/2.8 EX DG lens.

Both are very sharp, even wide open, represent very good value and will still be usable when you migrate to a full frame camera.
